I thought the reveal (of sorts) of the Necromancer was an awesome moment.

The one thread I'm really interested in for the next two movies is the Necromancer stuff. That's a plot thread that went nowhere in Unexpected Journey, but it looked soooooo much more interesting than Thorin's quest. That's the kind of stuff I'd like to see if Jackson's going to extend the reach of these movies.

Agreed. And the impression I'm getting is that will play a more significant role in this film.

I'm not going to have a chance to record anything until next weekend (i.e. the 12th) so in lieu of derailing this whole thing I'll bow out of the running and Tomahawk can take Austin.

Next time.  hmm

You don't have to bow out. Between getting female talent, auditioning other people, composing music and getting all my assets ready, I'm still at least a couple weeks out from really starting the project. My narration alone will fill several days once things get underway.

I'm working at the speed of a dad who has a couple of usable hours a night, so this'll take a little bit of time regardless.

That's fine, fireproof. This thing's gonna take some time anyways, so Friday's fine.

As for lines, just pick the juicy ones you like for the character you want, maybe 3 or so and go to town.

So me and Saniss have chatted, and I'm conceding Jimmy as well, so Saniss can grab him.

So Eddie, looks like it's down to you and me for Charli. You want us to throw you some voice samples Aural?

Yes, please. As mentioned above, maybe about 3 lines of dialogue (or more if you want) from the character you want to play so I have a basis of comparison.

BDA, you had mentioned earlier that you might want to try Gustav (I think). Are you auditioning for that, too?

The Desolation of Smaug is a literal location in Middle Earth. It's on the map.

I'm still down with doing the Boy or the Sailor.

I think you could probably do both. The Sailor has literally one line.

[Edit] Unless we've got more people than roles. In that case, I might need to give one of them to someone else.

Current Cast List

Austin - Dorkman, Tomahawk
Feng - Teague
Charli - BDA, Eddie
Gustav - fireproof78, bullet3
Boy - Rob
Antoinette - ?
Amaya - ?
Jimmy - Saniss
Caucasian brawler - Eddie
Sailor - Rob
Xiao Pei - ?

I've listed everyone who's expressed interest in a particular role. We have a few contenders for some of the meatier roles. May I suggest gladiatorial combat to determine the winner? An audio clip would be a less cool alternative.

ON AUDITIONS: I was thinking if you are one of the people that will need to audition, that you pick maybe 3 bits of dialogue of your preferred character so I have a basis of comparison?

NOTE: If you don't specify what role you want, you might end up with a one-liner or possibly not making the cut. Lock in early if you want to chew some scenery!

Have a read, pick the character you'd like to play and let me know. I'll update the cast list accordingly. As per BDA's suggestion, if we have 2 people vying for the same role, I'll get each interested party to send me a short audio audition.

I think you'd make a good Charli, BDA.

I'll be posting a link to the story for everyone tomorrow.

Oh yeah. You've got the right voice for Austin, Dorkman.

Just heard from my buddy. He's got actor friends and might have a lead on some female talent.

Auditions are a long and tricky process. I say we just go for it with the talent we can muster.

Saniss, I'll compile maybe like a % of dialog scale to each character. I can tell you right now that there are a couple that have literally 1 line of dialogue.

Teague, can you ask the other FIYH crew if they'd be interested contributing? I know Mike expressed interest earlier on in the thread and Trey has a voice made for this kind of thing.

Ok, I've read the finished draft and have compiled the character list. I've left the narrator out because I'd like to reserve that spot.

We have a total of 11 characters, including 2 female characters. I see that as a challenge. So get your wives/girlfriends on those mics, boys.

Oh, and the "short" story I asked for ballooned into 19 PAGES. By comparision, "Dust" was 6. So yeah. This'll be a longer multi-episode production, methinks.

Austin - Male - Main character; grizzled and sarcastic private dick
Feng - Male - Monk (Asian); polite and warm
Charli - Male - Cafe owner; kind to customers, admonishing to Austin
Gustav - Male - Master engineer (German); proud, intelligent, cunning
Boy - Male - Mysterious; bright, clever, cheerful
Antoinette - Female - Austin's secretary; sassy and opinionated
Amaya - Female - The client; princess (Asian); quiet, reserved and traditional
Jimmy - Male - Barkeep; gossipy, sly
Caucasian brawler - Male - Xiao Pei's lacky; big, strong, dumb
Sailor - Male - Sailor; salty (?)
Xiao Pei - Male - Mobster/monster (Asian); dangerous, full of himself, evil

All I can think to do is have people pick the character(s) they want to play and give first dibs if there are two people wanting the same one.

SAMURAI COP
While I only recently heard of this movie while watching RedLetterMedia's Half in the Bag show, apparently it's been a cult classic for quite a while. It's about a cop who is brought onto the LA police force who is also a samurai. Supposedly he's fluent in Japanese and lives the way of the samurai. I never saw that happen in the film. I think it's safe to say the movie doesn't live up to the box art.

So Samurai Cop is tasked with bringing down a drug cartel run by an insane but oddly sympathetic Japanese (samurai?) man. His henchmen are faceless Asians. His samurai? A big white guy who is the main antagonist of the film and a bald Asian guy who doesn't do anything whatsoever.

The dialogue is stilted and hamfisted. The acting is atrocious. The production value is near zero. The soundtrack is awesome in that late 80s cheesy kinda way. I swear it was shot on super 8. The EDITING, if you can call it that consists of hard cuts between fights, character interaction and sex scenes. There's one cut in particular where they talk about needing to get somewhere and as soon as the guy finishes saying that sentence BAM, we're there. I got whiplash.

It's fun and funny to watch with some memorably awful quotes. Definitely a movie to get together with your friends and watch. It didn't feel like it reached it's cult status potential with me personally, but I can see why people enjoy the movie.

Here's a taste:

Note: the version I saw looked nowhere near as nice as this trailer.

I have this problem where I can only play Minecraft in fits and starts before boredom sets in and I abandon it for another 3 months. I find that switching up the way I play Minecraft helps.

This last playthrough, I decided that mining and exploring could wait and I'd instead focus on building a homestead and getting a farm going. I build a nice little log cabin on a hill and spend hours finding and retrieving livestock. I built a stable and found two horses and I also planted crops and trees.

Now I've got enough resources to survive without worry (except at nights, but I'm working on it) and can get to mining. Not gonna lie, mining is fucking boring. The only excitement I get from it is when I find a massive crevasse or mine.

Another thing that I find REALLY helps keep things fun is to play with at least one other person.
