I've been mostly okay with this second Abrams trek because I consider it to be the big dumb fun movie that I didn't know the first one was (not to say that Nemesis wasn't stupid). This time, I knew what I was going in for and enjoyed myself a lot more than when I watched Trek09.

As long as one doesn't go in expecting the usual cerebral quality of Star Trek, it's great fun. It's not Prometheus.

Alright, finally saw it.
I did my best to judge it from the film and the film alone and it was...ok. I get that people are frustrated by rehashes, but we on this forum know that Hollywood has a tough time with original thought. It really does. But, the film holds its own, however, it definitely suffered from being Lindelof'ed as well as poor marketing.

So, did I have fun with it? Yes I did. I cried, twice (don't judge me wink ), rolled eyes a little bit at some points and generally found the movie well done.

Is it perfect? Um, no. I still think Trek 09 was better. But, I like the theme in it, I like the fact that things are not perfect in the Federation, and the performances are still excellent.

Yeah, the scene where Reynolds screams insults at Vampire Parker Posey is definitely a highlight.

Also, Jessica Biel.  Mmmmm.

Blade 3 was written (and directed) by David Goyer who wrote all the Blade movies, also Dark City, Batman Begins and several other pretty darn good things.  FWIW, his script for Blade 2 was, at the time, the best-written script I ever read.

His script? Did they change it from what was shot? I found the script but now need to watch the movie again.
The scene in the blood bank is still one of the more chilling and well done scenes IMHO.

Anyway, back to Demolition Man. I wish Denis Leary had done more acting. I enjoyed him as a voice actor as well as in "Operation Dumbo Drop" where he is a little more of the sly, manipulative business man than the libertarian "I'll eat what I want #$! $#@@@$!"

In other odd news, Denis Leary was in a movie directed by M. Night Shyamalan called "Wide Awake"

That was great. Will have to watch more but I love how they couldn't quite keep it together towards the end  lol
Also, Teague should watch Blade, all three of them, just because

They are sending out the pilot script pdf to anyone who joins their mailing list in the next day or so.

I think they really ballsed up the campaign, firstly by not trying to make only the $75,000 they needed for the pilot, having Leonard Nemoy support them and only telling their casting to people who had already donated.

It's easy to say this after the fact but it's what we were saying a month ago.

I'd heard of the series years ago when TrekToday did an article on the 'Blood and Fire' script Gerrold wrote for The Next Generation but it was this kickstarter campaign that actually got me reading it.

Yeah, I did the email newsletter just out of curiosity.

I'm glad they got some star power behind them but surprised they didn't do more. Almost like it was a test Kickstarter.

So close...

So, you're saying it's NOT predictable? No longer is almost every character an asshole who relentlessly insults and schemes against purported friends and allies as well as enemies?

You know, this is one of the reasons the later Dune books don't really work for me. There are so many conspiracies going on and very few sympathetic characters. The first Dune novel is like that but the sequels do it in droves.

Really wishing that someone more artistically talented than I would do House banners ala Game of Thrones for Dune.

I wonder what they will do now?
I seriously am curious now, and even though I support Gerrold in his endevour, I think it wasn't the best way to go about it.

Anyway, anyone else, besides Faldor, pick up one of the books?

Ok, well I hope you can find the music. I can try to help with that too. Also, I am picking a lot of songs that were not originally acoustic but i think could work. You can tell me if I'm wrong.
Off the cuff:
"Fall, Goliath, Fall" by Project 86
"Kryptonite" by 3 Doors Down
"Six Feet From the Edge" by Creed. Chord sheet: http://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/c/creed … ge_crd.htm

Oh, could you attempt this? wink

Well, then, I had to listen.
I left some suggestions in commenty comments box but I ran out of space for books, mostly because it is a long list. So, I shall expound (I left my two major suggestions on YT). Other good books are "Legend of the Star Wolf" by David Gerrold. I got Faldor into them and its good, hard, scifi; "Mistborn" by Brandon Sanderson: if you want to get in to his stuff without picking up a book first, his website is excellent: http://www.brandonsanderson.com/book/Mistborn.
For others unfamiliar with Sanderson's work, he is the one who is finishing Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" series.

Good job, BDA, like your logo and the editing was tight on this one.

Looking on IMDb, I'm actually surprised at how few movies named The Last Something have had sequels.

Whereas, we're up to Final Destination 5, and the Final Fantasy video games actually have a branching series of sequels, with things like Final Fantasy X-2 being the follow-up to Final Fantasy X, but distinct from Final Fantasy XI. (Although, to be fair, 'sequel' might not be the right term to describe how successive Final Fantasy games relate to one another.)

I do wish that, following Highlander's tag line of "There can be only one", Highlander 2's had been "Oops, there's another one, apparently".

A bit of trivia here, at least for Final Fantasy series-it was called that because it was going to be the last game for that studio before it went under. The game was such a success that it saved the company and the game series continued (much like the never ending story, but in video games).
I'm still waiting for the Final Destination where its the first commercial space shuttle or something  tongue

Yep, I don't think its bad in theory. This should be The Grey meets Pitch Black, the issue is instead of shooting for real in an interesting location they caked the thing in generic looking CG, Will Smith forced Jayden into the role (who has been unlikable and annoying as fuck in everthing I've seen him in), and then Shyamalan came in and directed the actors in his normal personality-sucking way (those line deliveries...what did you do to Will Smith... WHAT DID YOU DO).

Shyamaln: directing you outside your ability since 1992.
Also, does this call in to question his ability to write as well?
Also, I think the idea that Smith is pushing Jayden to fill his shoes and the kid is only 14! Really should let him grow up a little more. I mean, "Karate Kid" works because the story actually flows from a kid's trials and tribulations, more of a coming of age story. "After Earth" sounds like an attempt at Star Wars but with father-son dynamic rather than wise old wizard and young kid.  hmm

I commented but i'll comment here too.
Love the energy, keep it coming. Some more technical critiques )nothing personal, just random stuff that popped out at me). First of all, I can't believe that you the Hobbit Weta Chronicles. Good book smile
Secondly, the computer screen is a little distracting because I notice it changing.
Finally, my list of recommend books is so long, it really would be helpful to know what you have read wink

I'll do my best to keep up throughout the month smile

Prediction: John Hurt will be revealed to be the Eighth Doctor, having lived long after the events of the 1996 TV movie and ending the Time War while operating under another name.

Prediction: River Song will return with a baby. The father will be revealed to be an electronic glitch in the Library's matrix.

Prediction: Sean Biggerstaff (Harry Potter's Oliver Wood), who appeared in the Doctor Who: Shada Big Finish stuff with Paul McGann, will be cast as the twelfth Doctor.

Prediction: The twelfth Doctor's companion will be a teenage 16th century German duchess who is a lesbian.

Prediction: Daleks will take over and modify cyberman bodies or vice versa and result will be called cyberdaleks.

Prediction: Christopher Ecclestone will return for the 50th anniversary.

Those last two I definitely hope happen. I have always thought that the Daleks should take over the Cybermen, and thought it would happen in Tennat's run.
