Something in my mental pantry is "Wagner was a Nazi."
Not to say "well, fuck it, anybody can get away with anything," but more to constantly struggle with the question of art vs. artist.

ALBUMS ARE HARD, WE'RE TRYING TO MAKE IT GOOD, SHUT YOUR FACES
except eddie, eddie's good
Looks more like fake-Jesus than Caviezel, though.
I saw the trailer for that before... Nebraska, I think. I thought it looked alright, myself.
I love this thread.
You know Alan Menkin is EP of a fantasy musical on ABC this Spring, right Teague?
I did!
Well, "Alan Menken Gives Drew Struzan A Blowjob In Space" was last year. I checked.
So Sound City takes it.
Eh. Saw a lot of movies this year. Didn't really love many. Had to look at the wiki for 2013 to remember 'em all.
Here, this is easier. This is all the movies I particularly liked this year, listed least to most. And it's exactly ten. I'm as surprised as you are.
Nebraska
White House Down
The World's End
Blackfish
This Is The End
Gravity
Monsters University
Captain Phillips
The Wolf of Wall Street
Sound City
Still haven't seen Her, though.
SEE WHAT I'M SAYIN' WITH MY "BLINK THEN SERIES 5" JIVE?
I know people. I know humans. And for the record, I'm pretty sure I'm not the guy who told Vapes to watch them like that. That's just the right way to go. Objective truths!
Dividing it into genders is kind of fucked up, sure. But here's the thing: it's more that the entire situation is fucked up, and the "dividing genders" solution is the fairest triage in the meantime. I feel sort of the same way about affirmative action. "Is this fucked up?" "Yes." "Would stopping it make the situation better?" "Well... no. Not by itself, no. That'd probably be worse. You have to do more than that."
From whom do most of the best performances come? For whom do most of the best parts get written? Hell, by whom are most of the scripts written? It's all dudes. It's a general institutionalized guy-thing, like everywhere else. It's not that there's more-betterer male actors, or writers, or anything. It's that the movie industry is still largely a bunch of dudes, telling stories about other dudes, to other dudes. Women get the short-shrift systemically.
So, we could make one tiny little "fair" move in this overall scenario, and say "men and women should be treated equally, goddamnit, so they're all in one actor category now!" And on paper, that would be fairer. But that's in a vacuum, that's not real life - if we made that one change right now, while the rest of the situation is moving so much more slowly toward equilibrium, virtually no women would win Best Actor. It's not that all the great actresses on Earth would die overnight, it's that we'd suddenly be beholden to the schedule of the larger system evening out. We'd be waiting on the entire industry to become Actually Fair. Where great women writers are selling great scripts with great parts for great women actors that'll be voted on by great swaths of female actors in the category. Same as the guys.
And god knows how long that'll take.
Honestly, the one that bugs me is "comedienne." But whatever.
I would like to re-iterate how much I love this guy.
Awesome. How do you close the pop-up once you're done?
Test post:
Independence Day
Ghostbusters 2
2010: Moby Dick
I love you, man.
Oh yes, certainly. I couldn't disagree more. Do the shorter one. But it's fun that he replied.
Trailer!
I imagine it'd be a little freaky. I like the happy medium Pixar has been going for (and, IMO, accomplished with Monsters U) where they're sub-surface "fake material" characters and ambient occlusion, with increasingly pretty lighting.
Yeah, I think so.
I mean - frankly - I'm kinda bored by it either way. "Eh, not interested" bored, not "looking down on it" bored.
Great review.
...could you, uh, tell me what the movie was about? I didn't catch on to much of the subtext and metaphor stuff, I spent most of the movie writing the "'Llewyn' Look Tutorial for After Effects" in my head.
I tend not to get into most Coen stuff, if only because it seems like the major thing they like to do is character pieces, and if I'm not compelled by the character, the movie is just a slog for me. This was one of those cases. (Want some heresy? So was Lebowski.)
I liked the Harry-Potter-esque bits of molten slag coming off the effect, myself. That's new.
CG humans being truly photoreal consistently, even in one movie.
https, usually. I backspace the s.
