I watched it. i agree with some stuff, I disagree with others.

My general view on TS3 is that it's... alright. It has it's moments, and it's wraps up the series well enough. But it's definitely not worth the praise it's gotten. I never did understand the massive windfall of adoration it got, it just kinda felt like another decently made animated movie. So it definitely doesn't /suck/ but it's also not amazing.

I like the reference to Rango he made, I didn't get around to Rango until a couple months ago, and it's easily on my short list of best animated movies ever. It just has this weird matureness and willingness to not talk down to the audience that you don't see in those kinds of movies these days.

Voila!

Nice review. I'm a little biased for this movie... because well..it's the first real movie I ever worked on...so there's that (I haven't seen it yet, obviously). But I'm curious, why zero mention of the novel it's based on?

I was one bad audition away from getting to have drinks and hang out with Kevin MacDonald. Does that count?

(In answer to the other question...when I was in grade 5, I once told the cashier at the corner store that I had 2 dollars worth of candy when I actually had 3, and he didn't count it to make sure. It's a crime that still haunts me to this day.)

This is a question wrongly put I think. Bob never needs to hide what makes him special, he just needs to finally come to terms with the fact that the guy he used to be can't live in this world anymore. And his refusal of that belief is what causes all his problems.

Teague wrote:

...why does he tell Dash to slow down...

You just answered you're own question.

By the end of the movie Bob has come to terms with what it means to be a superhero living in the modern world, he's learned to live in the present (They as a family had to redefine it for the world a little bit along the way*, but that's just a factor of them finally coming together as a family). He's perfectly okay being the regular old dad at a race cheering from the bleachers with his family.

*The world changed when they saved it from Syndrome, the world no longer looks down on them with as much disdain as they used to. So he doesn't NEED to hide completely anymore. He can be the dad guy with his family in public and also the superhero when he needs to be. The difference is that he's being the superhero guy WITH his family, not trying to recreate the lone ranger glory days of yore.

The originals aren't that sacred to me, only 2 of them are any good in my opinion, so if they can capture the spirit of the originals and blow our minds with 40 years of vfx innovation, that could be a big success.

I think we're agree in spirit on the main point. I just think that the line between capturing the spirit of the originals, and having it feel like they were trying to capture the spirit of the originals (Thus causing a Tron Legacy thing) is a whole lot thinner than you do.

If they do pull it off, it could be great, it's just walking that line is a lot scarier place when so much is riding on being able to pull off every single moment exactly right, is my point.

Well...that...and I really don't want the old cast back. Their story is done, I want something new and fresh, give me Bounty Hunters, give me assassins and smugglers, give me tales of the once powerful order of jedi knights lost to time and their abandoned relics haunting the more desolate planets of the galaxy, or go the other direction, give me stories of the days when the Sith were plentiful and ruled the galaxy. Give me something that doesn't revolve around the 6 characters we've already spent 6 movies with.

My specific fear about the new Star Wars is that we'll get a situation similar to Tron Legacy. That's a dangerously close parallel, where it's taking a 40 year old franchise and trying to make a direct sequel to it while also re-introducing it as a big Disney franchise.

This triggered something I hadn't really thought about yet. You guys keep talking about the fact that just doing what the originals did and replicating that sense of fun and adventure is the obvious path, that is all it needs to be. But that treads a dangerously thin line. If you are trying to replicate that sense of whatever it was that made the originals so great, you are half a micron away from screwing it up entirely because the entire movie is going to be judged against the originals on every frame. It has to be nailed perfectly, but if you just go all out, set it 300 years after yavin, make it about bounty hunters and we never even see a a jedi, just do something crazy, then you are setting your own rules. You might lose a few people who think Star Wars is only about the Jedis, but you gain all the people who think it's just a great movie on it's own and just like being in THAT universe.

Is that really such a wild idea? I don't think so.

I'll be the first to admit that I have a lot of disdain for modern movies and modern movie culture in general atm, so that might be tainting my view to the more extremist point of view, but I did sincerely mean what I said in my rant about wanting to enjoy movies again...anyways.

I do agree that the version of Star Trek we got, was among the better versions we could have gotten. And I actually really liked Star Trek when I first saw, honestly I still kinda do. But it was also my first exposure to JJ, but after going through and watching more of his stuff, he really kinda feels like a solidly based director that has a few very select skills on his belt that he relies on and uses effectively, but he doesn't really step outside of those few select tools so his stuff ends up having a very singular and similar ring to them.

Maybe more news will help, but as it stands I can't help but see this as the studios taking the safest route they can find, and if they are already playing it safe this early on, it doesn't really inspire me to great heights about the final product we're going to get.

This is about to get very ragey for a short time so I apologize in advance, and I know most of you arn't going to agree with me, so just bear with me.

I want a director with a vision, because I'm sick and fucking tired of movies with no vision, movies that we are perfectly happy sit back and call "Perfectly workable" and then move on in our lives. I'm sick of not being able to be excited about movies, I'm sick of the most joyous thing I can say about a new project is "Well...they probably won't fuck it up." I want to be screaming in joy at the thought of a movie being made. I want to be able to look at something afterwards and say it was fucking amazing. I'm sick and fucking tired of walking out of theatres going, yep, there was another one of those. I'm saying this about Star Wars because I want to be saying it every goddamn movie these days, but Star Wars is big and exciting, and vast and filled with unending vats of inspiration and potential. And I want to be able to look back at a movie like that and say it was fucking awesome, not, yep, that was a definitely a solidly built piece of movie making. I want to be rejoicing in the streets at the pure unbridled joy of experiencing this story and this universe, not sitting back in my seat with a curt nod and some minute sense of respect for the film making craft displayed. I want to see someone, anyone, stand up and go yep we're doing something bold and amazing here, and if you don't like it, there's the fucking door.

Again...I really want to be saying this about every movie, but Star Wars is the matter at hand, and frankly everything surrounding it screams for something bold and dramatic to be done. To continue this legend of bizarrity and insanity that has led to this point. I'll remind you, 3 months ago, we were NEVER EVER getting another Star Wars movie. And now we're sitting here arguing about the director, that's fucking nuts.

Speaking personally. I don't hate the guy, far from it. I'm just sick of turning every goddamn corner and finding JJ there. I can't get away from him. And as already been stated several times in this thread, you know EXACTLY what you're going to get with JJ, and what he gives isn't anything I particularly enjoy . Star Trek was fine enough, but I haven't actually liked anything JJ's done. It all feels bland and if you asked me to pick a particular project out of a line up I probably couldn't. Like we've said, you know exactly what you're going to get with JJ, so why should I bother watching anything he's going to make from here on out? And it absolutely baffles me how he can be all of that, and still have tent pole after tent pole just thrown at him like he's some sort of film making demi-god.

Personally I think there are dozens of directors out there that are infinitely better suited to direct a Star Wars movie (Or any of the movies JJ's been given lately), who make me beyond EXCITED, who would make me amped and pumped up to see the new Star Wars. But instead we get..."Well...he's probably not gonna fuck it up, and I'm sure it'll look pretty...just like everything else he's ever made."

So I don't hate the guy, I just can't understand why everyone else keeps treating him like he's the second coming.

It's always been like that. At least here.

Currently reading Dreaming Aloud: The Life and Films of Jim Cameron.

And guys. Oh guys. Seriously. Run, don't walk.

Reading this mans life is like some sort of weird 20th century mythological epic.

Once you get past the weirdness of sentences like "Cameron's latest film, Titanic..." and so on, it's actually a pretty good read. I'm only about halfway through though.
