Awesome. Thanks so much, Teague. I've got plenty of editing and mixing to do, so whenever you're able to is fine by me.

Also, production update:

- section 3 & 4 vocals recorded
- section 3 & 4 rough edit complete
- just got full blessing from the author (it was public domain anyways, but I thought he should know) and he intends to showcase the final video on his blog

What's left is the sound effects, any additional musical cues, mixing and mastering. It'll be several days for all of that to be complete. It's a 25 minute story, so there's lots of work ahead.

The vibe I'm getting from everyone is they're on board with this collaboration idea and would like it to keep going.

I think the general consensus is it would be fun to have more characters for the next project. This first project is limited character-wise, but it for me it was about testing the waters and seeing if people were game. It's clear to me we have an exceeding amount of talent available.

What are your thoughts? Do you want to keep this going? If so, what should we do next? Do you want to try a radio play? Does anyone know of any public domain stories with multiple characters?

And this is why we collaborate. Holy. Shit. Teague. Way, WAY beyond my expectations. You completely nailed the tone I was going for. Thank you so much! big_smile

Can I make a request? Can I get the background and title isolated into separate files? That way I can keep the title displaying over the entire story (which'll be some 30 odd minutes probably) and can queue when the fade in/fade out events happen at the beginning and end.

Is that okay? Other than that, this is absolutely perfect. The last thing I want to be is a pain in the ass, so let me know if I'm overstepping at all.

Also, how would you like to be credited? I'll use your name in the video credits, but I can do something a bit more in the video description. Do you want me to link to your YouTube channel and/or is there another website you'd like me to link to?

I have the biggest shit eating grin on my face right now big_smile

FYI (in case you care about a production log updates) here's where we're at for "Dust":

- Added rough musical intro
- Re-recorded section 1 (of 4) vocals
- Tested out Tomahawk and Zarban vocals
- Rough edit of section 1 complete
- Section 1 sound effects roughed in
- Recorded section 2 vocals
- Excerpt 1 (feat Tomahawk) posted: http://snd.sc/19nIYCo
- Excerpt 1 (feat Zarban) posted: http://snd.sc/15qp0Ti

Still have a ways to go, but it feels like progress is going at a nice steady pace. My goal is to have section 3 vocals recorded tonight. Stretch goal is to either begin rough edit of section 2 or plow through and finish vocals for section 4.

Anyone up for trying a short title treatment for "Dust"? I'm thinking, well, dust. I picture the setting as 1930s dustbowl America. Wheat, wind, clouds, dust, rusty windmills, dead cars, old weathered wood, etc. The title could be dust blowing past some wheat, or dust being kicked up off the dry ground maybe.

I tend to pick a background (static or animated) and center the title in the frame. The title is usually animated separately. Most of the time, I just fade it in since I possess zero After Effects abilities. The videos are 720p and I believe just the standard 16:9 widescreen format. Not sure what the finished length will be... could be close to 30 mins in total. If the background is animated, maybe something that loops easily?

As always, you'll be credited in the video and in the description.

If no one's interested, that's fine. I'm happy enough to do it.

Inspired by Zarban's audition I present a four minute excerpt from Lovecraft's "The Hound."

Excellent! You're bottom end is a little heavy, but the narration was top notch.

Did you want to add your name to the roster?

Zarban's excerpt is up:

Yeah, sorry I didn't stipulate that. Your settings are perfect.

It's hard to keep this all organized on a discussion forum. But we're doing it!

This particular story is more like a Stephen King short story than a spooky campfire tale.

I really would love to do something like a radio play, for sure.

Yep, Zarban, exactly.

Check the original post. "Dust" is the sample narration I posted earlier. There's a link to the audio file and to the original story. I need someone to voice Carl, the old farmer neighbour.

I think the question is going to have to be: who wants to/is able to collaborate with me on "Dust"?

My hope is to have the vocals finished by mid to late next week because there's gonna be an assload of audio production and editing that'll have to happen after that.

It's not a ton of voice work for the role of Carl. There are 3 more major sections to the story, roughly the same length as the excerpt. Carl's in sections 1, 2 and 4; the meat of his role is in section 2 and he has like 2 lines in section 4. All told, it'll probably be close to 30 mins in total.

Any takers?

If there's more than one person vying for the role, then... name out of a hat, I guess?

(255 replies, posted in Creations)

Faldor: you're hired, too smile

I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for a 3-4 person story or maybe even some kind of short play we can adapt. The only stipulations I have are that the writing's half decent and the material is public domain.

Zarban. Dude. Awesome job! Maybe I should just hand the keys to the channel over to you wink

I will most definitely be using you for a story.

Do you want to give Carl from "Dust" a shot? Have a look at the original post for a link to the SoundCloud excerpt and the story. I'll PM you the link to the Box.com folder I've set up.

I think this may be the most excited I've been about anything in a long time. Fuck. I'm so goddamn inspired after watching your doc, Teague. I want your album. I want Alex's babies. I want to live in that studio. I want Andrew to be my roomate. I wanna get drunk with Blain. Just... gah!

Big thanks to Tomahawk for his prompt samples.

Here's the excerpt with his tracks roughed in: http://snd.sc/19nIYCo

I'm. fucking. loving. this.

Anyone else who wants to give this a shot is welcome. I'll make a version for each contributor.

I should mention that you don't have to worry about any post processing on your vocal tracks. I'll be handling compression, dynamics etc during the mastering process.

Can I just admit right now I've been squeeing on the inside about this since the first response?

Awesome.

Teague, can you edit to add if anyone wants to do the title card or title animation? Have a look at what I've done previously for a taste. I'd love to do something more After Effects-y, but I don't have the skills.

[Edit] By title card, I mean the one for the story, not the one for the channel.

In all seriousness. Who can get me some vocal samples by, let's say, Wednesday of next week?

I'm working on updating the excerpt with some temped sound effects and possibly some minimal music.

Ah, very nice. I really like that Roland. I was eyeing up the Steinberg CI1. Right now I've just got a crappy old Line6 TonePort UX1 and it does the job, but it's really not a long term solution.

Ended up just getting a replacement ball. It's a SHURE SM58 and the ball is about 20 years old. Hopefully that helps.

Also scored a sweet deal on an M-AUDIO ProKeys Sono 61 key controller for half the retail price. Woot!
