It's more the bit where the JW scriptures are a bastardized spin-off of the "proper" Bible. But they're not as reviled as the Mormons, whose book is the Fifty Shades of Gray to the Bible's Twilight.

Heh. I know this but that was the reason my neighbour gave smile

Another thing that the girl said (this was yesterday) is that she used to be gay but becoming a Christian made her straight again. I bit my tongue although I really wanted to say something. Previous things she said makes more sense now, like she doesn't enjoy sex and 'nice arse' when an attractive girl walked passed while we were talking. She is definitely not a straight girl and it's worrying that she is trying to hide who she really is. On the other hand, she has got nothing to do with me so why should I care......yet I do.....

Also, I'm amazed that clip of the Irish President is going viral now, two years after it happened.

At first I thought this had the potential to be the ultimate democratizing tool for filmmakers. Being able to visualize a big action scene for free. But then I remembered that we don't visual vivid detail. So it might be eventually be good for storyboarding. Oh, and helping people who can't communicate. But mostly as a storyboarding tool.

Alright so here's the plan. We're going to take episodes from normal TV shows and movies, and just put FishOutOfWater doing background jokes in all of them. THEY WILL ALL BE HILARIOUS AND AMAZING. BECAUSE FISHOUTOFWATER IS HILARIOUS AND AWESOME. Could you imagine, the CSI crew examine a dead hookers body while Fish get's fascinated with her shoes and starts trying to walk in them. Gold right there people. GOLD!

I'm pretty sure the amount of love I hold for this movie, and specifically this character is bordering on unhealthy.

Ridley Scott thinks there is nothing fresh from science fiction.
I would care to disagree.
Especially with Curiosity probe and and new discoveries with Mars, the other probes, as well as the United States Air Force's space plane, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_X-37
New discoveries are constantly happening which provides fresh developments for science fiction.
Thoughts?

Re: General Talk/Stuff That won't Go Anywhere Else

So the Americans amongst have had their little election, and I was wondering, given the portrayal of your nation as being deeply divided and the painting by his opponents of a president that's leading the nation to an apocalyptic wasteland, could his re-election cause a catastrophe?

I guess, what I'm really asking is whether Obama is going to be target for right wing nutters the same way that Gabby Gifford was. Is all the vitriol spewed by the opposition just rhetoric or will conservatives who've lost this 'crucial' election feel a need to take matters into their own hands to rescue their country?

That's the image of the US I have at the moment, which is admittedly informed mostly from the Daily Show and snippets of the news here and there - am I just buying into the hype?  I guess I'm a little concerned that the US is heading towards another presidential assassination attempt.

Honestly, I'm feeling pretty optimistic about America's future. Maybe it's the legalization of gay marriage by popular vote in 4 states, but I feel like the tide is going to shift in a more moderate direction in Obama's second term. The GOP hopefully just realized that they need to run more moderates, and if they do, I'll feel much better about America's political climate.

Re: General Talk/Stuff That won't Go Anywhere Else

The fact that Obama has been elected twice shows that racism is dying in the US. However, nuts will be nuts. Plenty of presidents have been targeted by crazies who had no racial ax to grind.

Some guy tried to kill Clinton by crashing his light airplane into the White House, and another guy shot up the White House from the street with an assault rifle. And of course Reagan and Ford both narrowly avoided assassination.

EDIT: on a side note, wunderkind poll watcher Nate Silver of the New York Times' 538 blog was 100% right, right down to the very narrow Florida win for Obama. His stuff is what convinced me that last night was going to be something of a walkaway for Obama instead of the squeaker that most of the media was selling. This will change future election coverage.

Looking at the electoral map I predict a cold, civil war. The rural regions of red versus big bad blue. They have more guns than we do, in the aggregate, so concern is justified...as are massive arms buildups and economic sanctions. Mutually assured destruction goes without saying.

You're being a bit hysterical.  Look at the map not as a state red and blur breakdown, but county wide, and you'll see a giant nation of purple.  Here in California, Orange County is massively red, San Diego is largely red with a giant blue crown,San Fran is ultimate blue, and all the farmland in central and nor cal is red.  The political middle is still much larger than the extremes of both parties so no old civil war anytime soon.

If you don't think the Red's have been holding the congress hostage for the past 4 years, I don't know what else to say. The purple maps don't inspire much hope in me that you're correct, either.

All hyperbole aside, we can't even seem to agree to disagree with the Reds on several issues.  To them they are fundamental while to us they are dangerously regressive.

Wiki the 1984 Presidential Election, if you're interested to see an entirely red map. Mondale carried exactly one state in that election, Minnesota.

Same in 1972, Nixon's reelection. He won every state but Massachusetts.

Well, remember the old founding father's quote about the American Revolution, about how a third of the colonists wanted independence, a third were against, and a third didn't care. The number for revolution was actually probably far smaller, in those pre-poll days smile As you can see in places like Syria, all you need is the extremes to decide to stand firm and not give ground. I agree it's not going to happen here, but mostly because, despite all the hate, people do step down when they lose elections. You wouldn't believe how incredible that is...

Re: General Talk/Stuff That won't Go Anywhere Else

It's not so much full-scale revolution (but... seriously... some people have talked about that... I mean besides Drunk Trump) but a couple of semi-coordinated Timothy McVeigh-style terrorist incidents that is most likely. It only takes a couple of serious anti-government ideologs to produce some major destruction that they think might start a revolt.

EDIT: By the way, the green "Other" on that purple America map in the '60s represents the various States Rights parties. They were racists who broke with the Democrats when the Dems took up civil rights. They got absorbed by the Republican party when Nixon introduced his "Southern strategy" of appealing to racists with code words.

^truth^

I know many people who've said they will move from Illinois to Indiana, and several who actually have, to escape the blue-style politics, taxation, etc. If this becomes a generational trend the red states will get redder, further polarizing the regional issues.
