Re: Suggest an Intermission!

how about an episode discussing the different studios releasing, and then re-releasing multiple versions of a single movie on dvd/bluray. Example:  Watchmen(single disc blu ray "Director's Cut")  and then, months later releasing the 4 disc "Ultimate Cut".
I'ld be very interested in hearing others discuss how they feel about this, and when they feel ok buying a new movie.
Is it ok to buy this movie 3 times, if it's a movie that deserves the recognition ? is it simply the studio milking the audience for more money ?!

Please discuss.  wink

Re: Suggest an Intermission!

How about an intermission which discusses the film scores and the way they affect the films.
Many films have fantastic scores, and they enhance the films. Example: Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jaws,
the Pirates of the Caribbean movies...... and many many more.
You guys could discuss how a certain film would suffer/benefit from having a score from a particular composer.
Example: Batman(1989) if the score was done by someone other than Danny Elfman.

Re: Suggest an Intermission!

Thanks for all the suggestions, sir. This list is useful to have.

We do have a conversation about Danny Elfman and Batman in the first few minutes of Batman Returns, in the meantime.

I'm actually somewhat of an apologist for double dipping. Here is the scenario I envision...

  • The movie debuts and the studio demands a quick DVD/Blu-ray release to capture its popularity. The cast and crew are exhausted and want to be done with the film and so release whatever they have, maybe without even a commentary.

  • Later, the movie proves popular enough that the studio decides that a special edition would sell well. The cast and crew have had enough time to gain some perspective and are interested in gathering the deleted scenes and behind-the-scenes stuff, and putting effort into other extras, so they release the Collector's Edition or Special Edition. They include a commentary this time or more commentaries if they had one on the original release. Also, if there's some extra blood or boobs or swearing they cut out for a PG-13, they put that back in and call it the Unrated Cut.

  • Later still, the film has retained enough popularity that Marketing is convinced another release would sell well if it offered something more. The director says he would have preferred to do X instead of Y in certain scenes, and they put out a recut Director's Cut with new commentary. Or maybe, if it's an older film, they find lost footage. Or this time they do a full-on Collector's Edition in a special box with a copy of the main character's signature paisley scarf.

Most of the time, I don't think the studio really plans the second or third release. They just sort of find themselves in a position to make more money if they can repackage the movie. If you wait long enough after the theatrical release to do a really proper DVD/Blu-ray with all the bells and whistles (but without the paisley scarf), you've probably missed that window of popularity that you had from the theatrical release's marketing and good reviews and word of mouth.

Warning: I'm probably rewriting this post as you read it.

Re: Suggest an Intermission!

I own the region 2 Back to the Future trilogy dvds then I got the region 1 dvds for the commentaries that were missing from the one I already had. Then Christmas 2010 I got the Blu Ray set from my mum. That was the same year I got the Alien movies Blu Rays and the Lethal Weapon Blu Rays which I already had on dvd (except the thrid and fourth Alien films). My mum bought me a lot of Blu Rays that year, which is awesome.

I also own the region 1 and 2 versions of Who Framed Roger Rabbit because the r2 disc has no extras.

In 2006 Trey had enough money to not work for a year, and spent it doing post on Volumes One and Two.  Trey has only had that luxury once since then, but that year was spent doing post on Ark.

If I can ever afford to take another six months off, it'll be Volume Three's turn.

Re: Suggest an Intermission!

How about something along the lines of a "Where are they now?" topic.
I was recently watching the bluray for "Adventures of Baron Munchausen" ... and in the special features, there is an interview with Eric Idle. He basically ends up saying that he's fed-up with the Hollywood system, and that's why he doesn't like doing films anymore.
I'm sure that there are many other actors/actresses who have just decided to pull the plug on Hollywood.
Is this interesting enough to anyone besides myself ?!

I don't think you could ever say any of the Python guys were ever IN the Hollywood system, at least not long enough to get fed-up with it (apart from the usual wanting control of whatever they're involved in, and not getting it). That said, a look at those who did bolt would be interesting, as well as those who came in late after making their mark elsewhere.

I certainly don't want to give the impression that I thought these guys were Hollywood heavyweights, or the biggest stars of their day, but ... they did have an incredible success with "Life of Brian" and "Holy Grail." And with the exception of John Cleese, most of the Pythons have chosen to stay out of the Hollywood system and focus on educational/travel programs/etc... Gilliam is still trying to do his own films. Idle has focused mostly on writing.

I just thought that this would be a pretty interesting discussion. And we could even discuss actors/actresses other than the Pythons ! big_smile

...and how about an episode dedicated to talking about directors and their bodies of work.
there are some directors who have built an amazing catalog of films that when you watch, you think: "oh yeah. this is definitely _____!"
examples:
James Cameron,
Ridley Scott,
Tony Scott,
Chris Nolan,
Guy Ritchie ........ etc...
What do you guys think ?!?!?!

I was just mildly objecting to calling the Python films "Hollywood" productions smile There's a difference between working within the system, and getting suckers to give you money to do your own thing. You can't leave what you weren't in, although you can certainly avoid it.

Good list but they have spoke a ton about the dude above. They've done commentaries for six of his films and Trey has worked with him, so I think they've said basically all they can say about him big_smile

Re: Suggest an Intermission!

Same goes for Nolan really. Not quite sure what else there is to be said about him that wasn't covered in Prestige, Dark Knight or Inception.

I guess memento, but I think they kinda get into that in inception don't they?

Although that list reminding me of Ridley Scott. I'm so pumped for Prometheus. Thats gonna be a helluva thing. Might be a good time to bring up the career of one Ridley Scott. It is only a month away.
