Yeah, my argument FOR Joffrey's wedding as the season-ender is that it shakes everything the hell up, and says that the war for the throne isn't over after all.  And there's been SO much setup for Joffrey's wedding all season - from a dramatic standpoint, this would be the perfect time for the Lannisters to now have the wedding as their ultimate victory dance.  And then... oopsy.

It's also a nice gift for the viewers who've been hating Joffrey so hard and yet he's remained untouched all this time.    It would be just as much a shocker as the Red Wedding, but in a GOOD way.  smile

I'm sure they anticipated the number of people who said last week "the hell with this show, nothing good ever happens!"... if it was me, I'd want to throw the viewers a bone to say "look, something GOOD for a change!"

Finally from a production standpoint, if they get Joffrey off the show NOW then they don't have to deal with him getting suddenly older again next season - a problem with ALL the kids.  They can't do anything about Arya, Samsa and Bran, but they did finally get Rickon outa the picture last week.   smile

On the other hand, I haven't looked closely enough at the timeline to know for sure if bumping up the Purple wedding would scramble things too much to be practical.

If not, then Coldhands, Lady Stoneheart, and launching Arya toward  Braavos would all make fine season-end cliffhangers...and if you look at the way they've been building those storylines all season, they all seem fairly likely.

Re: Game of Thrones (TV Discussion | SPOILERS)

The problem with moving Joffrey's wedding up is that it would severely accelerate the Tyrion and Sansa storylines. Tyrion isn't in the dungeons for very long before he kills Tywin, as far as I remember, and Sansa doesn't do much after Joff's death before she and Littlefinger abscond to the Vale. Could you do a whole season with Tyrion in prison and Sansa at the Vale? It's certainly possible. But more than likely they'll end it with Lady Stoneheart. I mean, the episode title literally means "Mother." That's a dead giveaway right there.

FYI, I think we need to have a separate thread for book-readers, because Spoilers become weird and nebulous at this point. Don't read any of like the last 6 spoiler posts if you are only a show-watcher

Too late... luckily what did get spoiled, I had manged to piece together myself...but yeah, new thread...or at least mention that it's a spoiler for future show events.

Oh man I always love when people say that. Too precious. It's called purple because it is the color of the jeweled hair net Sansa wears, which the Tyrells use to poison Joffrey.

And to respond to Trey:

  Show
I argue for Joffrey's death at this point so they don't have to keep Jack Gleeson around for another season. Better to finish his contract now then pay for one or two more episodes when he's gone soon anyway.

And you're going to regret that smiley face for Rickon's departure when he returns from UNICORN CANNIBAL ISLAND

I'm definitely up for a book-reader thread.

Re: Game of Thrones (TV Discussion | SPOILERS)

This is now the TV discussion thread.

Also put spoilers in the topic thread, just in case. To further that, please mark your spoilers with the episode you're referencing in case anyone is behind.

Ex:

Season 3, Episode 9 Show
THEY'RE ALL DEAD, JIM.

Thanks.

Okay, a little heads up for the people who haven't read the books: Those spoilers in here aren't from Episode 9. They seem to be from the books that are later on.

Yeah we covered that already, but yeah, the last page and a half or so have a lot from the books.

Re: Game of Thrones (TV Discussion | SPOILERS)

Although each individual component was still fairly interesting, over the last two books I felt a loss of overall story momentum.    The extreme detail - which I liked up until then - became a bit much.  I wanted everyone to stop having dinners and get going already.

Re: Game of Thrones (TV Discussion | SPOILERS)

books 4 and 5 are a big drop-off in quality because they make 2 rather strange choices that just KILL the pacing. Book 4 and 5 happen concurrently, but focus on different characters. Book 4 follows mostly side-characters you don't give a shit about who do very little that's important. Book 5 follows the characters you care about, and starts out strong, but its like 1500 pages of buildup towards 2 major events that it then LEAVES OFF for book 6. That might end up being less of a problem in the overall story assuming the next 2 books deliver, but judged on its own it's a massive case of blue-balls.

It doesn't help that they follow up Storm of Swords, which is the best in the series (so far) and chock full of huge, important story events (so much so that they had to split it into 2 tv seasons).

This is where I feel the showrunners will really be able to improve on the books by cutting to the chase much faster and getting rid of a lot of narrative dead-weight. I wouldn't be surprised if they found a way to condense most of books 4 and 5 into a single season, or chose to go off the map entirely.

Re: Game of Thrones (TV Discussion | SPOILERS)

I think most sane people would agree that AFFC and ADWD haven't been worth the long wait. Together, they've taken 10 years. I'll try not to get into a rant about GRRM's work philosophy and terrible sense of PR.

There are many reasons why they're inferior works, pacing and the introduction of unnecessary characters (4 Ironborn POVs?) and locations being the main ones. These are then compounded by the overly descriptive travelogue nature for many of the POVs (which we never saw in the earlier books, for instance, Catelyn zips around Westeros a lot without any . The main problem with ADWD, as bullet3 says above, is that his editor didn't do her job. So instead of getting the climax of that story which the whole thing is leading up to, we get chapters of Dany pining over Daario like it's Twilight.

I sound harsh, but in all fairness, they're still great writing and enjoyable to read.

And not to be an arsehole, but we're talking about the TV show in the books thread and the books in the TV thread  smile

The threads are for book readers and non-book readers.  Topics within each are up for grabs.  smile

Re: Game of Thrones (TV Discussion | SPOILERS)

I started reading the first book and got about two thirds of the way through and whilst the start went into much more detail than the series I found the latter half less so, also Daenerys and Sansa have really infuriating inner dialogues.

I might pick them up again when I finish my current book but i'm not sure if I want to over take the TV show.

Are you gonna take that, RedXavier? You should blackmail a prostitute into stabbing him in after sex.

This is a good time to inform anyone that complaining about Sansa will result in very, very long posts from me explaining why you are wrong.
