Topic: 2012 Wrap-Up. The best movies of the year

So at the beginning of 2012, we were all anticipating a ripper (that's an Aussie term) year in movies. There was much to look forward to: Prometheus, John Carter, Dark Knight Rises, and The Hobbit.

And now in hindsight, it feels slightly anti-climactic.

Prometheus was THE clusterfuck of the year, the worst disappointment since Phantom Menace. As Hitler said in the Downfall parody of it: announce the franchise dead, after Ridley Scott does a George Lucas.

John Carter - a giant bomb that was yawn inducing at best. Kitsch followed it up with another bomb, Battleship.

Dark Knight Rises - much more flawed than what we were expecting from Boy Wonder Nolan.

The Hobbit - has Jackson peaked, just like Nolan and Scott?

In summary, the high-water mark of these franchises can't be achieved again: The Dark Knight, Return of the King, Alien + Aliens, so we're naive to expect lightning to be captured twice.

There there's the non-tentpoles: Looper, Dredd, Total Recall, Hunger Games, Brave etc. Some were okay, but nothing earth-shattering, and most forgettable even if they achieved two hours' worth of entertainment.

I suppose the biggest news in film of the year was the Disney buyout of Lucas. But my expectations are dialled way down. Ditto for GI Joe Retaliation, Man of Steel, World War Z, Oblivion, Avatar 2, Lone Ranger, and Pacific Rim in 2013/14.

Is two hours of entertainment the new 'success benchmark' rather than something that gets under your skin,  inspires, keeps you talking/thinking, and is infinitely rewatchable?

What was the last 'Perfect Movie' in the sense of a Back to the Future, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Aliens, Star Wars?

The Avengers is by far my favourite film this year. There are so many I haven't seen, though.

Re: 2012 Wrap-Up. The best movies of the year

Withholding any year-end stuff until I see zero dark thirty and django. That being said, I'd say while the summer was pretty terrible this year, the early spring and fall have been really pretty packed.

At the beginning of the year we got haywire, the grey, chronicle, cabin in the woods, and the raid, of which the first was pretty solid, and the latter 4 I'd consider perfect movies.

Fall we got looper, dredd, skyfall, the master, seven psychopaths,
and now zero dark thirty and django. I'd say that's a really solid lineup. I'm walking out of the year with 10 new movies I thought were good to fucking outstanding, and that's not including other stuff I loved that many didn't, like Dark Knight Rises and Expendables 2.

Edit: shit forgot about avengers as well, though tbh I don't like it as much as dkr or most of the ones on my list.

Re: 2012 Wrap-Up. The best movies of the year

I liked The Grey, but does it really fall under the category of Perfect Movie?
As for me, the movies I liked the most this year are Hunger Games, TDKR and Avengers. The first half of Looper was great, but it threw me off the train once it reached the farmhouse and I was never able to get on again.

Re: 2012 Wrap-Up. The best movies of the year

Yes, I also forgot Avengers which tells you something, but yes, it was entertaining at the time.

I wonder how much psychology is at play here: the expectations with regard to Avengers were low, but it was better than any of us thought it had a right to be, so it's labelled success, but with TDKR we're expecting another The Dark Knight, and it didn't meet those expectations and so were slightly disappointed. Ditto for The Hobbit.

One thing I learned this year is to take 10-20 points off Rotten Tomatoes. My tastes used to be in tune with it throughout much of the decade, but when Prometheus gets near 80% upon first release and Skyfall gets over 90%, that rating system is unreliable.

Re: 2012 Wrap-Up. The best movies of the year

Well like we say, a perfect movie doesn't mean you or everyone will like it, but I would argue The Grey completely delivers and executes on its themes and what it's trying to do. I know some people hate the ending but I believe its the exact right ending for the story they're telling.

Also, I agree completely about Looper, its in my good not great list.

Re: 2012 Wrap-Up. The best movies of the year

I wouldn't exactly call Prometheus a clusterfuck... but it had the potential to be much more than it is. IMO it's much better than The Phantom Menace, which was the worst bummer of its decade.

Compared to Alien 3 & 4 and Alien vs Predator movies, Prometheus is not bad at all.

The Dark Knight Rises didn't disappoint me, since I already knew nobody could out-Legder Heath Ledger anyway.

I found Men In Black III, American Reunion and The Hunger Games pretty entertaining, but not mind-blowing.

Yes, agreed, and that's how I'd describe the line-up for 2013 too.

Lincoln

Skyfall

And, by all accounts, Zero Dark will end up on this list.

Re: 2012 Wrap-Up. The best movies of the year

I had no problems with TDKR apart from one dodgy edit and the fact that it was a tad underwhelming compared to TDK. I still enjoyed it though. And the second half 'change' of Looper didn't bother me either. I don't think it changed genre just tone. It got darker but the TK stuff was there from the start, it didn't just appear half way through which I have heard from some people. I thought Prometheus, The Expendables 2, Total Recall and The Amazing Spider-man were a bit 'meh'. I haven't seen The Hunger Games, Brave, Argo, Paranorman, Frankenweenie, Dredd or Battleship and have no desire to see The Hobbit or that Twilight nonsense.

My own personal top five of the year-

1. The Avengers
2. The Raid
3. Skyfall
4. Cabin in the Woods
5. The Dark Knight Rises

I'm gonna withhold until I see Hobbit, Zero Dark Thirty, Les Mis, and Django. Also haven't seen Cloud Atlas, Killing Them Softly, Skyfall, or Life of Pi.

But offhand, my picks for the year so far are Cabin in the Woods and Pitch Perfect.

Re: 2012 Wrap-Up. The best movies of the year

I've not yet seen many of the films from 2012 that I'd like to, but have enjoyed:

The Avengers, because they pulled it off.
Skyfall, because I like Bond and appreciated the fan service.

Exhaustive? Hardly. But it's been a busy year, so cut me some slack, a'ight?

Re: 2012 Wrap-Up. The best movies of the year

The UK doesn't get Cloud Atlas, Zero Dark Thirty (which I don't want to see anyway), Les Mis, Lincoln or Django Unchained until early next year sad

Yet we got Killing Them Softly back in September and get Pitch Perfect on the 21st. Weird.

Pitch Perfect is... just, such my shit. Non-a capella enthusiasts I know have enjoyed it muchly (Frommeyer, for one), but dude. That movie is solid Teague Porn.

Re: 2012 Wrap-Up. The best movies of the year

Of the movies I've seen this year, these are my top 15.

1) Cloud Atlas
2) Moonrise Kingdom
3) Looper
4) Holy Motors
5) Paranorman (Django Unchained)
6) The Cabin in the Woods
7) Chronicle
8) Argo
9) Lincoln
10) The Avengers
11) Frankenweenie
12) Seven Psychopaths
13) Indie Game: The Movie
14) Skyfall
15) Beasts of the Southern Wild

Django is tentatively placed, because I read the screenplay and liked it a lot. Unless the movie deviates tremendously, that's where it'll probably end up when I see it. Zero Dark Thirty will probably be in here somewhere as well.

Somewhere below this list are Dark Knight Rises, Hunger Games, Wreck-It Ralph, The Raid, The Grey, and others.

6. Looper
7. The Avengers

Re: 2012 Wrap-Up. The best movies of the year

I'm always bad at these because I don't keep very good track of what comes out in what year.

Looking things up on Box Office Mojo, the movies I most enjoyed this year:

1. Cloud Atlas
2. Dredd
3. Cabin in the Woods
4. Rock of Ages
5. Ted
6. Dark Knight Rises
7. Avengers
8. Wreck-It Ralph
9. Total Recall
10. Amazing Spider-Man

Movies I least enjoyed:

1. Flight
2. Brave
3. John Carter
4. The Hobbit
5. Dark Shadows
6. Breaking Dawn
7. The Man With the Iron Fists
8. Snow White and the Huntsman
9. Battleship
10. Prometheus

Movies I haven't seen but expect may claim a spot on one list or the other:

Magic Mike
Argo
The Master
Lincoln
Life of Pi
Rise of the Guardians
Moonrise Kingdom
Lawless
Seven Psychopaths
Safety Not Guaranteed
Robot & Frank
Hitchcock
Django Unchained
Les Miserables
Zero Dark Thirty

I'm glad a friend told me The Master was a character study before I saw it, if I didn't have that info I probably wouldn't have liked it.

I have watched Pitch Perfect three times in the last week and it was great every time.  We'll see if viewing #4 keeps it up.

I'll echo what others have said with Skyfall and the Avengers.  I'm betting Zero Dark Thirty, Life of Pi, and Beasts of the Southern Wild will end up on my list when I see them. I'm worried that my expectations about Les Mis will lead me to be disappointed, especially with Tom Hooper directing.

Re: 2012 Wrap-Up. The best movies of the year

Jesus fucking christ, would someone for once explain me, IN WRITTEN FORM SINCE I HAVEN'T HEARD THE COMMENTARY, what's up with all the fucking hatred for Prometheus? 3 People are telling me to see it, the rest of the world, apparently, tells me not to. It looks cool! So what's the big deal that completely ruins it in all aspects?
