Re: Kick-Ass

It may just be personal taste, but I had high hopes when production was underway and a few trailers had been released, only to walk out of the theater felling like I watched a movie called "Half-ass" rather then "Kick-ass".

I went to the comic to see if anything too important story-wise was left out, but only found that the comic had this dark humor and tone that was left completely absent from the film. Almost all of the plot points are there, but none of them end up being a substantial part of what the movie is trying to be:

and that is something that feels like a half-assed superbad b-plot/pg-13 watchmen a-plot/shot like spiderman

i guess there could be a movie in-between "super", "watchmen" and this that id find awesome. but this on its own just felt blaaaaaaaaaannnnnnd.

Re: Kick-Ass

I quite liked this flick and the commentary. When they released the little clip at comicon where Nic Cage shoots hitgirl, you could tell that people were like "WTF!? I have to go see this movie now!" where before it had Nic Cage in it and people were kinda put off a bit.

Overall, tho, I liked the movie a lot, but it felt a bit off for me in some sections. I wasn't feeling the kid who played Red Mist at all, so any scene with him in it died. I also was pretty unaware of the fact that they were hanging out in a comic shop throughout most of the movie. There are a couple shots of the backissue bin thing early on and at the end, but most of the time it didn't feel like any comic shop I've ever been in. Like, the windows weren't plastered over with ads and posters and shit, there weren't racks all over the god damn place filled with toys and comics and shit, it was all clean and nice looking. It looked like a coffee shop that happened to have some comics in the back. There weren't even any annoying loud dudes playing D&D or anything. What the hell, man? You're a comic book movie, you should know what the inside of a comic shop feels like!

Aside from that, I liked it a lot.

Re: Kick-Ass

Great commentary guys.  I really enjoyed this movie and made sure to buy the DVD because I couldn't see it in theaters.

I just wanted to add to your discussion about the fire.  When there is fire inside a building it actually makes the room completely black.  When outside a fire gives off light, however if there is ever a fire inside a structure like a house or a building the smoke will actually become so thick you will not be able to see your hand in front of your face.  You'll be able to see the flames if you look directly at them, but everything else will be black.  I was taken out of the movie a bit because of this warehouse fire.  If there was that much fire in that room, they would not have been able to enter.  Their suits would have melted to their skin, and their lungs would have been destroyed by the smoke and heat.  If they hadn't added so much flames to that scene it would have been much more believable for me.  But as it stands, they would have been dead within seconds.

Re: Kick-Ass

I think I took the wrong lesson away from this movie. After my first viewing I kind of thought that it was about how people have an obligation to society to do this kind of crazy shit for the sake of bettering it as a whole, which is in part reflected constantly by people standing idly by and doing nothing as horrible shit shit goes down, for example the mugging, the hit and run, the web cast... Am I part of the problem? Am I as bad as the people who thought Tyler Durden was right?

Re: Kick-Ass

I haven't heard the commentary yet, but I'm kind of iffy on Kick-Ass. I like a lot of things about the movie, but I feel like the ending didn't grow naturally from the beginning. They feel like different movies.

When I was listening to this commentary, I was in my bathrobe while sitting next to my cats. Thanks Trey, your comments made me laugh big_smile

Ok, when this film was released in the UK, a lot of people (mostly readers and writers of the Daily Mail newspaper) that the scene with Hit-Girl dressed as a schoolgirl. was sexualising a child. I call bullshit. There is no sexual connotations in that scene whatsoever. The guys in the scene aren't being weird towards her, none of them wolf-whistle or are checking her out, she doesn't flirt with them. She's only wearing a disguise that she can blend in with because of her age.

(just wanted to get that off my chest big_smile)

I remember this specifically because, in typical Daily Mail fashion, they later released a piece on how a "sleek, long dress with a green sash hugged her delicate figure adoringly" or something along those lines.  That this paper is still being printed astonishes me...

On another note, great commentary, I loved the hell out of this movie, I think there's a certain childish glee about it that's hard to find in modern cinema but it still has a powerful message with pretty solid performances all around.  An extremely entertaining movie.

Too much garbage in your face?  There's plenty of space in space!

Re: Kick-Ass

Hollywood has been portraying fires like this for years tough, so for me, it's just a suspension of disbelief thing.

Hell, even the movie Backdraft, about firefighters, did this.

Though, since you're an actual firefighter, I can completely understand this.

Let's not forget how mobile phones tend to be old models, yet extremely high-tech in films too. Able to film with perfect quality etc. I don't hear any complaints about that tongue

Re: Kick-Ass

Ignoring all the interesting stuff you said in the commentary, allow me instead to pick up on the bamboozling pronunciation of 'Millar' that I repeatedly heard. Millar is a common name in Scotland, where Mark Millar is from, and I have never heard it pronounced any way other than rhyming with 'pillar' or 'filler'.

So, pour quoi on the Mill-ARR?

Re: Kick-Ass

It's a mangling of his name that stuck within comic book fandom.  Not sure where it started.

Re: Kick-Ass

Here in MURRICA, the "rhymes with filler" name is spelled "Miller." Since it's spelled different I think people just assume it's pronounced different.

/but pillar is spelled with an "a" and pronounced the same way
//shut up
///murrica
////Ron Paul

Totally off topic, but my wife got me a new Bike for Christmas.  It's a blue, red, and white Schwinn, and I named it MURRICA.
