Hmm....Apparently the Outlaw Line out of Vegas says that odds are dropping fast on Peter Capaldi.  He's the 11/8 favorite over at William Hill, for example, with Ben Daniels at 4/1 and Rory Kinnear at 6/1. 

I'd just been lamenting the fact that they probably wouldn't go for an interesting choice.  (My favorite NuWho doctor has been Christopher Eccelston, though, so I'm obviously not the target audience.  Though to be fair I've only seen a handful of Matt Smith's episodes.)  However, Peter Capaldi could actually be interesting.  I've just been watching some William Hartnell serials actually and thinking "yeah, they need to get back to a Doctor that's a bit crankier and less of a milquetoast."  Shame we probably won't get the swearing.

I've been watching some of Four's adventures with Leela, and they've become some of my favorite episodes strictly because of the dynamic between the two. Apparently Tom Baker didn't like the concept for the character but decided to be a dick to the actress instead, and his disapproval came through heavily in his performance during her first several appearances. As a result, we have a situation where the Doctor and his Companion are wary of each other but still work together  to survive their adventures.

I love the slow build of their trust; it's so much more realistic and way more interesting than endless Doctor-worship we get from nearly all of the NuWho Companions and most of the guest stars. Everyone he meets seems to think this guy is awesome (even his enemies), and that gets really boring, really fast. I think that's a big part of why I love Donna so much. It's like she's the person in the Whoniverse who can see Ten's many glaring flaws and is willing to look past them and be a friend. Rory and Craig go in this category as well with Eleven.

So yeah, I'd love a Doctor who'd present a bit more of a challenge for Clara. Someone less receptive to her rote and uninspired flirting. Someone who might just make her rethink some of her choices. I rather adore Peter Capaldi, though in a perfect world, we'd get another series of The Hour instead, I would rather pleased if he got the role.

Tom Baker was pushing for there to be NO companion. He seriously told the producers that maybe he could just have some sort of parrot on his shoulder he could talk to. His interest in companions improved once he got involved in the casting of the second Romana.

A Doctor who is a bit less friendly would be interesting. I still love Colin Baker's line from the end of his first story: "I am the Doctor... whether you like it, or not."

Actually, to really improve the series, they need to break the Tardis. Go back to the days of him not being able to control it, of his companion being someone STUCK on it against their will. The whole idea of them being able to pop back home every evening has now been done to death.

A talking cabbage, no less. And that is what makes Tom Baker awesome. That and the fact that he is Tom Baker.

Are you running away because you suggested a) a black actor b) a mediocre actor or c) someone who was a semi-regular for two years and therefore can't be the Doctor?

I'd welcome a black actor. The announcement will be in front of a live audience, there must be a reason for that. It is either going to be a known (in the UK at least) face or it'll be something different (a non-white dude/a woman/ a goat).

Because he was already on the show and can't be the Doctor.

Actually, I agree with Chiwetel Ejiofor as he is a fantastic actor.

Also, Wayne Pygram (AKA Scorpius) or Lani Tapu (also from Farscape) would be on my list.

I wanted Chiwetel Ejiofor as The Doctor when Tennant left. It won't be him but it would be awesome.

Two companions and One Doctor had been on the show before getting cast. 

Doctor Who changes its mythology and continuity at will, so that's no barrier. However, that would make the Time Lords a race where genders don't really exist, as it's all random what you'll be next time. No need to go there. If they want a female Doctor, kill him off and bring in his granddaughter Susan to take over his name and legacy.
