Topic: Superman

I'm sure I'm going to get crap for this, but I'm honestly confused and would like to discuss the end of Superman (1978).

Towards the end the Superman commentary Trey says that Superman is NOT reversing the Earth's rotation to turn back time. Instead, Superman is merely flying faster than light & traveling back and the Earth only APPEARS to be rotating backward because the flow of time has reversed.

I understand that justification, but I really think it's flawed based on what we see in the film. Please bear with me for a moment.

If the above statement were true, the moment Superman stops, time would resume moving forward at its normal pace and he should return to Earth to save Lois -- but that's not what we see in the film. Superman flies back in time. We see the montage of disasters reversing then he stops and changes the direction he is flying and continues to fly fast around the world. If the "flying fast to go back in time" argument was valid, he would continue to travel BACK in time regardless of the direction he was flying.

I really think the movie just got it wrong and is showing Superman reversing the direction of the earth's rotation = time travel. I swear I'm not some IMDB posting schmuck.

For reference, here is a link to the scene courtesy of Youtube:

Re: Superman

Superman is a movie based on an alien who gets superpowers from a different colored sun, and you take issue with time travel mechanics. I love this forum.

Eh, I think an arguement could be made for either one (I unfortunately could not stay to here Trey's comments so will have to wait for the release).
I tried to come up with a way to clarify my thoughts on the matter but I confused myself. So, here is a Big Bang clip instead:

God loves you!

The film's magic bean is, "there is this alien who gets superpowers from a different colored sun" so no, I don't take issue with that. Clearly, this isn't an important argument I'm not going to lose sleep over it either way. Regardless of the ending Superman is still an excellent film. The only thing I'm taking issue with is the retcon to explain away the poorly thought out (or at least a poorly presented) climax.

Re: Superman

I think you have a better chance of a discussion when the commentary gets released and there is an official thread for it. smile
