Topic: Website stuff.

We're thinking about doing a round of (potentially major) cosmetic and functionality changes to the homepage, and before we get too far into that process, I wanna hear from you guys. Do you even visit the homepage? When you visit it, why? What functionality do you currently use? What would you love? What would make it more useful? What do you think would make a first time visitor more interested?

Any thoughts?

Re: Website stuff.

I've said it before, so this may sound like a broken record*.... The site needs a central catalog that is easily browsed, with nice, big pictures and a log line for each.

As for the front page, I don't think anyone has it really figured out yet—not other commentary sites, not Rifftrax, not Hulu, not YouTube.... Ideally, I think listeners would best be served by a Recent Releases section of images (posters or frames from the movies) with the movie title and a snarky log line. Then a Fan Favorites section below that would have the most popular entries, like the Star Wars stuff.

Then maybe the whole other half of the front page should have an embedded video with short clips from various movies (fair use for parody) with your audio quotes over the top, mocking or explaining. That would give new visitors a really good idea of what to expect and would only need to be updated every month or so with a fresh clip stuck at the beginning.

* There used to be these things called "records", which were analog audio disks. When they got badly scratched, the playback device would hop when it hit the scratch, often causing the same few seconds to play over and over again.

Warning: I'm probably rewriting this post as you read it.

Re: Website stuff.

If I said that I was about to post exactly that, almost down to the letter, would you believe me? No? Well, that's okay.

What I think it comes down to is that more of the movies need to be more prominent. One big thumbnail and 6 tiny ones on a page aren't as enticing as, say, 15 or 20 medium-sized ones, all with a snarky log line.

Also, I believe that analysis and criticism now fall under fair use, so the clip idea is well-protected.

Re: Website stuff.

You know what would be cool?  Get someone who can draw to do DIF versions of the movie posters in question.  Nostalgia Critic does something kind of like this, but slightly more crudely (IE, a drawing of himself cutting the head off a care bear with an axe).

I'm thinking like instead of having the Jaws poster as the icon for the episode, it's a drawing of Trey looking up with his mouth wide the fuck open, a little tiny red headed man in a bikini treading water unsuspecting above.

Not really HELPFUL, but it would be pretty funny, it'd be unique, and it might prevent retards (I'm keeping that word, bleeding heart scum) from leaving reviews saying "DURR I THOUGHT IT WAS DA MOVIES!"

Re: Website stuff.

I think a user rating system similar to what netflix does would be cool.  Our listeners could rate which commentaries they like.  It would also help us on the other side of the curtain to gauge what our listeners respond to.

I think the left side of the front page is largely wasted.  I think if the lower third of the screen was a sliding movie poster button-y thing that would be better.  The current logo could be smaller and take up a top third bar or something.

Zarban makes good points and quite frankly, it's annoying big_smile

I visit the homepage every week to download the episode.

Re: Website stuff.

umm, well yeah.
seems like coming in late on this was most of the main ideas have been said.

I tend to hit the front page often. As one of those folks who went with a zune instead of a ipod, I download direct, as well as subscribe, to get the un-enhanced versions.

But I also often bring up the site to show it to co-workers when the conversation drifts to what am I doing this weekend, or what am I listening to.

So I second, or 3rd or 5th, the idea of showcasing the archive in a more evident and visual way, if only to make showing it off to others even more fun.

I also like the rating system, as selfishly it would give me a reason to go back and re-listen to the full archive so I could rate intelligently. And would then allow for a "general consensus" of which episodes were the more interesting to assist in recommending to friends in the "well try out this one, and if you like it check out the others" type of moment.

Re: Website stuff.

A rating system seems like kind of a Pandora's box to me.  I know we all have our favorites, and I know that behind the scenes we have a feel for which are our strong and weak episodes, but do we really want to see a concrete public representation of that?

Of course on the other hand, we could use the data for an anual "People's choice awards" thing come the next anniversary show.  Other than that I really can't see myself going through the entire back catalogue and objectively giving each episode a yeh, ney, or meh.  I think we'd see most folks just marking their favorites, and a lot of unrated episodes.  Might just be me though.

Re: Website stuff.

Only a few things spring to mind.

  • Optimise the site for Google; a search for "film commentary podcast" doesn't seem to list DiF (Zarban's site is on page 3).

  • Update the blog to include film related news / opinion (maybe see if Mike wants to link in his blog content?). It keeps the site content fresh and drives repeat visits.

  • Ditch the frames, they don't work so well on mobile devices.

  • Guest interviews - audio or transcripts.
