*cringes* Oooo, sometimes that font is not kind to particular words: "SUTHER"?

Not crazy about the numerous times DiF rips on certain actors.

Having said that, this commentary is totally going on DVD. I also tweeted about it to James Gunn. I hope he listens. smile

EDITED TO ADD: At the end, Brian is trying to figure out why this movie starring Nathan Fillion wasn't a hit.

The Answer: It didn't come out NOW. And I mean RIGHT NOW, like this past weekend. Fillion has a huge, hit show, he's been in more and this is October.

Same goes for Serenity. The firefly fan base is way bigger now than it was back then, as is Fillion because of his exposure. Most importantly (and I can't believe Universal made the same mistake twice, with Scott Pilgrim), DON'T SHOW YOUR MOVIE A BUNCH FOR FREE BEFORE IT COMES OUT!

Except Castle isn't a "huge hit show".   It's been successful enough to make it through three seasons, but it's not even in the top 25 ratings-wise and it's pretty much tied in its timeslot this season with Hawaii Five-0 in raw numbers.  But 5-0 is way ahead of Castle in the 18-49 demo.  Which means (un-ironically) your mom watches Castle.

So it's unlikely that Castle fans would be lining up to see Fillion in a grossout '80's horror homage, OR a reboot of a niche sci-fi tv series, if either were to be released right now.

I don't even know what this means.  Are you suggesting that free screenings somehow hurt box office numbers?  All movies do that - some are successful and some aren't. I was at one of the Serenity screenings, the theater maybe sat a thousand.  If we'd all bought tickets, that'd have been maybe ten thousand bucks - not even a blip compared to box office numbers.  And I bought a ticket to see it in regular release again, as did everyone else who wanted to see it.   There just weren't that many of us, then or now.

I love Firefly, I love Serenity.  But fanboys gots to come to Jesus on the fact that they were not, are not, and never will be mainstream successful.   Those poor wretches who STILL insist that Syfy should start running Firefly episodes again because that'd equal huge ratings... they're as bad as the folks who post RON PAUL in every forum they can find.  Not happening, move on.

Anyway, Fillion clearly loves his culty followers and services them nicely.  (I know an actress in a similar position, and it's tricky to do well.)  But he hasn't done a feature since Slither, might be because of a lack of offers, or maybe just because he doesn't want to, or need to.  If he ever does headline a hit movie, it'll be a hit because it's a hit, not because he's the star.

Re: Slither

Jeez, Trey. Why don't you just yank away my football and drink my milkshake while you're at it.

I co-host a weekly podcast all about Castle (My Mom doesn't watch the show, FYI. Although, it probably doesn't matter since she's not a Nielsen member, and don't get me started on that BS). In our news segment, we're always reading about strong numbers and early-season pick-ups for the program. Now, your definition of "hit" may differ from ABC's, but the show must be doing something right because McPherson (president of ABC) has expressed often how pleased he is with Castle's numbers.

Is it unlikely that Castle fans would go to a theater to see Slither? Sure, but not impossible. However, it is more likely that Nathan Fillion fans would do it, which can be mutually exclusive (I tuned into Castle because of Fillion. I wasn't crazy about the pilot, but I stuck around for him and the show grew on me). Case in point, I've seen numerous instances lately, of folks who aren't Horror or Comic Book fans but have stated explicitly that they will happily go see Joss Whedon's latest projects, Cabin In The Woods and The Avengers, respectively.

Truth is, we'll never know for certain how Nathan Fillion's current popularity would affect the Box Office for Slither or Serenity because Castle and Fillion's current popularity didn't exist at the time. I was merely suggesting it might have helped.

But hey, I'm not in the business so what do I know?

Let's just agree to disagree. I'm sure we can at least both agree that Slither is good. smile

Re: Slither

I gotta side with Trey here. Fillion's fanbase may be virulent, but it could be killed with a liberal application of penicillin.

And Castle was fun for a while, but the show has gone all weird by forgetting that it's best when it's half comedy, not half Lifetime movie. At this point, I'd rather watch a Nikki Heat TV show. She gets laid.

Re: Slither

Average? It's on the higher end of normal, I guess, not super high. Still. The town he's contrasting it with, my shit-ass town, would be more like 35.

Re: Slither

I was mainly pointing out the scarcity of people population wise, based on Teagues statement indicating that his hometown was teeny tiny.

For comparison, this is where DIF is recorded, well hard to get a "LA" read on that site, so I'm generalizing to the Burbank are.

http://www.city-data.com/city/Burbank-California.html

And I was more looking at just the population size, and racial breakdown, but wow there's a lot more data there than I noticed at first.

Re: Slither

I don't know if we have anything broken down to that level, the best I could find was this.

Burbank looks to have a similar median income as here, think our cost of living is higher though hmm

Re: Slither

I've been a fan of Fillion since his stint on Two Guys And A Girl. I knew he was in Firefly but I never saw it for a while, so I actually saw him in Buffy first. I knew Serenity was coming out so I bought the Firefly dvds and watched the whole lot in a weekend. I missed the chance to see Whedon host a Serenity showing at the Edinburgh film festival that year so I paid to see it in the cinema. I also saw Slither and White Noise 2 at the cinema......

Fillion is one of my man-crushes, I don't mind admitting it. Although, the way he pronounced 'Edinburgh' in this weeks Castle episode annoyed me, somewhat big_smile

Re: Slither

Did he give it a hard G, Jimmy?

English spelling. It needs to change.

EDIT
Median income comparisons are tricky. It's about the same in the US and Australia, but not only do you have exchange rates to figure in, but also cost of living, taxation rate, and quality of life.

Aussies have a slightly higher cost of living, significantly higher (but still low by Western standards) taxation rates, much lower crime rate, but vastly higher—yet still quite reasonable—venomous platypus attack rate.

Re: Slither

He pronounced it, like I've heard many of you gorgeous Americans* pronounce it- Edinburrow. It's actually pronounced- Edinburrah. Nitpicky, sure, but it does sound different. And, pfffft, those English and their wrong words, huh? big_smile

Re: Slither

No worries. I wasn't planning on it. Edinburrah, huh? That's how I've been pronouncing it. Had no idea it was correct.

As for the "English" language and its spelling, I think we can agree both sides are a bit wonky, particularly with the "rules". I mean, "I before E, except after C"? It sounds like they're just making shit up! Besides, what about the words, "Weird" and "Their"?

Back to Slither, I like all the interesting and sometimes unconventional ways in which "love conquers all." Sure, there's Bill's love for Starla, but what about Starla and Grant's love for each other? I'd say without it, one or both of them would have surely died early on in the picture.

Then, you are full of win big_smile

The first time I heard 'Edinburrow' was on a Simpsons commentary. Both Matt Groening and Dan Castellaneta pronounced it that way. On seperate occasions.

Back to Slither.

Indeed, it's great smile

Yeah, that's how it sounds like it is pronounced by someone with a Scottish accent. If you know what I mean.

Plus, we usually 'Scottish' up our words, even names of towns. Glasgow is often pronounced 'Glesgae'. and a small town close to me is called Ravenstruther but we pronounce it 'Rainstrae'

Re: Slither

The small town talk was funny. We would "cruise" which would end by circling the Sonic parking lot, and that was fun. Grew up in TN.

And I got your Dushku lovin' back Pavlich smile (And Castle is still a solid, and sometimes quite charming procedural, mostly due to Fillion)

Fun commentary, and great timing. I was going to rewatch Slither this Cocktober anyway.

I'll be deep in the cold, cold ground before I pronounce it that way. It may be correct, but it also sounds ridiculous.

Thanks for the good vibes, sir. I need it to balance against the hate. Recording Castlecast in a few minutes from now. I'll definitely be bringing all this up in the A.P.B. segment (No, I'm not going to explain that. It's not my fault you don't watch Castle OR listen to my stuff). smile
