Sure, hell lot better than Guddafi but I wouldn't call them the good guys just yet.

Anyway, came in to suggest (if it hasn't already), The Conversation and/or Blow Out. Not sure if there's much interest in either, but both are personal favorites of mine (the latter especially).

Re: Suggest a movie!

They are excellent films, though I don't know if you could fill an entire commentary talking about The Conversation. It's an extremely sparse movie in terms of story and dialogue, and while DIF pulled off a great 2001 commentary, at least in that movie they could talk about the making of all the crazy practical sets and special effects.

Re: Suggest a movie!

re: selecting the weekends films

Do you wake up Sat morning and think wouldn't it be cool to do these ones, or do you have a big list of to-dos and are working your way through them ?

I ask because (for me) between the Saturday "we're doing this" reveal and the Sunday "welcome welcome to DIF..." there isn't much time to locate and watch/rewatch the films. So, if there is a big list, have you considered releasing it so forthcoming movies could be watched in the preceding week ? Even if this list is a "coming sometime" one rather than an etched in stone diary type of affair, it would be handy - watching things a few weeks in advance preferable to cramming 2 in on Saturday and falling asleep during the next days analysis.

Re: Suggest a movie!

To peel back the curtain a bit...

We do have a master matrix of films that was polled by you, our community, from this very thread.  The four prime DiF'ers choose which ones they HAVE to be on, are indifferent to, and don't want to be on, which allows regular sub's like myself and Ryan our appearances.  Usually Teague sends out an email to whoever is going to be doing commentaries by Wednesday, though sometimes its been a week or two in advance. There is usually some discussion about which two films to watch in a taping.  Sometimes its very easy to decide, sometimes it takes some discussion, but usually by Friday everyone knows what and when.  Often, Teague will invite people over to his place Friday night to catch up on it.

One time we were going to do the Patriot, because I suggested it and there are some legit awesome scenes in it.  Brian, Teague, and I sat down.....and PLODDED through it.  We realized how long it was, and how little to say of it we had at the time, and that night pulled a pinch hitter.  SO it's not an exact science by any means.

Re: Suggest a movie!

They have a large list of movies they want to do, which occasionally gets posted here in this thread, and it's a matter of who's around that weekend and what they want to do. As for releasing a long range recording schedule, remember the live streaming is just a bonus they're doing as a favor to us. I'd rather get a week's notice on what's being released for the podcast then for the weekend recording.

I think that the Terra Nova episode of The Intermission proved that there is significant insight to be had into television by you guys. Are there any shows that you would consider doing episodes of, or are you sticking to movies strictly?

It's been brought up before, but among other things not only do they have a large backlog of movies to get to, but Dorkman is the type to want to ALL of a series once it's started. So, unless it's something short best not to go there smile

There's a lot to be said about television in general, and maybe certain shows in particular, a la Terra Nova.  But we'll most likely do that in the broad-stroke Intermission format, rather than episode-specific commentaries.

One tv topic I'd like to do is the Nielsen ratings.    When it comes to the Nielsens, it seems every fanboy on the internet is a closet Creationist.   "*Your so-called "statistics" and "data" are just lies!  It's all a plot to deny the divinity of Joss Whedon!"  smile

Re: Suggest a movie!

There is something wonky about Nielsen, or maybe they've improved. It was a shock to local TV here when they switched to "people meters", and the news ratings were suddenly all different. I'd pay more heed to them if there was a competing service to keep them honest.

Re: Suggest a movie!

Switching to people meters WAS one of the improvements they've made recently.  Nielsen's constantly refining their methodology, just like any good science.   Admittedly statistics isn't a "hard" science like, say, chemistry,  and the most stringently-gathered data is still no more than a "best guess".   But we base a lot of our lives on those best guesses, it's not just for tv shows.

Also in the past few years, numerous competing methods that measure media consumption have arrived on the scene, many of which are more detailed than the Nielsens.   To the point where the refrain of "why don't they measure ____ instead" has become fairly common.  Again, that's why it might make a good intermission topic - to get into why some of those alternate measurements don't matter, and why others are counted, but aren't considered as important as the Nielsen numbers, why still others suggest that the Nielsens are most likely accurate, etc.

I don't want to get into any more detail here, since maybe this is enough to put the topic on the Intermission schedule.  smile

"Blow Out", Brian De Palma's 1981 thriller starring John Travolta as a movie sound recordist. 'Nuff said.

Re: Suggest a movie!

I like "Blow Out" a lot myself, it definitely falls into the category of "They don't make movies like THAT anymore."  It had extra  relevance at the time for me personally - 1981 was my third year of film school, and Travolta's character was using the exact same equipment I was.  So that was cool.

I'd be surprised if any other DiF regulars have even seen it, tho...

It's my favourite De Palma film, and probably his best film.

Re: Suggest a movie!

In looking through all the classic films your guys have covered, I noticed that you haven't done Back to the Future.  There's so much to talk about with those movies:  ILM's work, the acting and actors, Spielberg and Zemeckis, BTTF's future predictions...etc.

I assume its been requested here and is on your list...but here's me making another request!  Besides, there have been a few references to Zemeckis made in the commentaries, so it's only natural that you guys do it.

*Deep breath* The panelists love BttF but don't know what to say about it. They plan to do it eventually, but the joke is that every time someone asks about it, they push it back a few more weeks.

Bttf is the Down In Front equivalent of Freebird.  Gets requested all the time, we just don't know how to play it.

And there are already so many cover versions.
