O NOES! Is BTTF2 now the Sekrit Punxsutawney Phil of DTF?

This is the best Christmas present I've ever received!

However, coming from a Jew, that doesn't mean a whole lot.

I celebrate Kwanzaa, you inconsiderate motherfuckers.

Re: Back to the Future

I used to work at Universal Studios. My dad worked there as well at the BTTF ride. Next to the ride is a store where you could buy all kinds of BTTF stuff and a bunch of random weird crap that didn't really have much to do with BTTF beyond the fact that some of it kinda looked futuristic or westerny or whatever and had some BTTF quote or photo or something on it. You know, mostly just cheap crap and shirts and stuff.

However, one thing they didn't sell were the movies themselves. They sold all the other movies at all the other attractions, and in the main store at the front of the park you could buy tons of universal movies and gift sets and what-not, but nowhere in the park could you find BTTF movies. I always thought that was weird.

Of course, now there's no BTTF presence in the park at all. They replaced the ride with MIB or something.

Re: Back to the Future

Blame Trey. He destroyed your childhood. And he cackled while he did it.

Re: Back to the Future

It's now the Simpsons ride.  They paid me lots of money and I met Matt Groening and James Brooks.

Your childhood wasn't all that great anyhow.

Re: Back to the Future

Is the T-2 ride still there? That's the one I'd be really bummed about if they got rid off it, personally.

Re: Back to the Future

I haven't listened yet, but I expect Trey to start doing a commentary for the Simpsons movie after about 10 minutes...Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, Kwanzaa, Festivus, etc.

I hope you were all visited by a generous fat man.

Re: Back to the Future

it seems this podcast was done without the chat room (to preserve the surprise I suppose..)

I was hoping we could discuss some of the alternate drafts, etc (Maybe DiF does, I'm only 20 minutes in)...

I LOVE the idea from an early draft that Doc is a video pirate & that Marty is the bootlegger that video tapes the movies (hence why Marty has Doc's video camera at his house). It really explains the relationship between Doc & Marty. I've never had a problem with the relationship, but I know many people that think it's odd for a 17 year old to pal around with a 70+ year old mad scientist.

It also could explain the big amp, you bootleg movies for me, I'll build you a big ass amp (because he's certainly doesn't have the money to PAY Marty, but he might have the parts to build the amp).

Re: Back to the Future

I never heard of that draft, but I can sorta understand why the movie studio wouldn't be too thrilled about a movie that portrays a couple of movie bootleggers as the sympathetic protagonists in their film.

Re: Back to the Future

So, I've been making Down In Front Editions of some of my favorite movies, with custom-designed, sleek looking menus, trailers and DiF commentaries. I'll have to add this one to the list. This is THE perfect movie.

Near the end, DiF talks about how Biff is the only one doing an honest day's work. Actually, it gets pointed out that George caught Biff in a lie about putting on the second coat. Even after all these years, Biff is still a lying, no good scumbag. Also, I'm sure George paid him handsomely for the job, so it's not like he made Biff his bitch, exactly. smile

Re: Back to the Future

This is a great commentary, and Back to the Future rules, but Back to the Future 2 is one of the best time travel movies ever?!! That's not one of those things you're allowed to just throw out there assuming everyone agrees. Makes me really curious to hear the BTF 2 commentary, cause I flat out think that's a bad movie, super goofy, illogical as all fuck, no heart to it. But that's for another thread I suppose.

Re: Back to the Future

I'd be very interested to hear you devote a big post to BTTF 2, if you have some time. Give a premise for your opinion, outline it with some examples, etc..

It's the holidays, so if you don't have the inclination, no big. I'd just like to hear an opposing viewpoint.

Re: Back to the Future

Sure, I don't mind at all. I suspect a big part of this is that I didn't grow up with it, I only saw the second one last year, but I just couldn't get into it.

I think the biggest issue for me is the tone, and how wacky and over the top everything is. The first movie skirted with those things tonally with the Biff character, but that was never the focus, and there was a sense of character realism, where you could relate with what was happening to Marty (being turned on by lea thompson) and what his parents were thinking/doing in the past and present. The sequel puts a MAJOR focus on Biff, who's extremely over the top and annoying to watch on screen. But even beyond Biff, a lot of the Marty stuff feels overly wacky this time around. I think the whole "Marty is easily provoked to do things" theme is handled really clumsily and on the nose, and the Marty character from the first movie feels smarter to me than that. Yes he could have that anger problem, but it could come out more organically and gradually in the story, instead of people just calling him "chicken" all the time. That's problem 1, and it ties into problem 2, which is that I find the future they go into really disappointing in a lot of ways.

The first movie ends with this epic promise of adventures in the future, but the future in this movie manages to feel too over-the-top and not-creative enough at the same time (bear with me). The costumes and set design is really ridiculous to me, without being grounded enough in reality, to where it gets a bit grating after awhile. I think I just would've liked something more in the vein of Blade Runner/Alien for the future, or something like Fifth Element if you want to look to an example of wacky designs that still feel grounded. At the same time, I feel it's not nearly ambitious enough, because all of the focus remains in hill-valley, and you can tell they've just redressed all the sets from part 1. There was a real opportunity to expand outward and have an awesome future adventure, but they really keep it scaled back, which ties into problem 3.

I really think it was a mistake to go so crazy with the time hopping and alternate realities. The first movie took place almost entirely in the past, which allowed it to set everything up properly and explore the time period. The 2nd movie they're jumping between 3 different time periods, which doesn't give enough time to develop any of them (except the last one, which was developed in the first movie). Personally, I really would've preferred if the whole movie took place in the future, and they were getting into crazy adventures there, maybe travelling into space, doing cool things.

I don't think they needed to have Biff as the "villain" again, they should've gone in a fresh direction with it and had some new threat to Marty's kids in the future.

My final problem is major believability issues (bear with me). I really think that having Marty's son look identical to Marty, and having Marty pretend to be him, is totally retarded. That's not how genetics works, your children do not look like identical replicas, and it really bugs me in this movie. I have similar issues with the end sequence. I know a lot of people really like the fact that this movie has Marty sneaking around the events of the 1st one in the past, and I do like that in concept, but ultimately, it doesn't really work for me in execution. It's insane the degree to where everyone seems to be completely blind, and Marty manages to not get spotted. There's like 5 different occasions where its OBVIOUS he would've been seen or heard, yet for some reason doesn't get noticed.

That's the gist of my criticisms, and why I think it's really a huge step down from the first one.
I will concede that the hoverboards and power laces are BADASS though.

Re: Back to the Future

I completely agree with all the things you say, but they weren't enough to keep me from enjoying the movie. I actually liked the time-hopping because that's what a time machine is for, altho honestly it's close to being ruined by Tom Wilson's acting.

I think it would have been rather worse if BTTF 2 was like BTTF 1 and 3 and almost every other time travel story: go to a different time and have an adventure that consists largely of just trying to get back to your own time. 1 and 3 do that story well, but I don't want three of the same movie.

Re: Back to the Future

EDIT: Okay, that was fun. It got a little more squigie than I imagined it would, but there's some great analysis.

However...
Jesus Christ, Down in Front, you KNOW I will listen to this. You KNOW I hate demonstrably slanderous misstatements. You KNOW I'm a car guy. And Wikipedia is TWO CLICKS away from everything. Why would you claim John DeLorean was a creep arrested with 70 pounds of cocaine in an airport?!

He stalled the feds for MONTHS while he talked to his lawyer about how he had been approached and feared for his family's safety. He never carried the cocaine the feds provided or the front money the feds provided or helped plan the deal the feds approached him with. His lawyer called NO WITNESSES, and he was found not guilty by reason of ENTRAPMENT.

Also, in the '80s all car speedos only went to 85. It was a law to discourage speeding. The car could go faster than that.
