There's some Avengers-style rendition of the DiF logo for you guys.

Also, quick question: Is Dorkman okay? His speech was so slurred in this, I'm worried about him. smile

I know that the HULK doesn't say "Asshole" after he slams Loki around like a ragdoll, but, god-damn !! Wouldn't that have been cool ?!?!

If there's one thing I gained from this, it's that I am uber pumped to see how the the hell Thor COMPLETELY destroyed Mike.

I'm pretty sure the obsession with skyscrapers being knocked down is a manifestation of the 21st century male's emasculation by the increasing dominance of women in today's world compounded by the feelings of failure brought about by the recession.

Or it could be an allegory for the satisfaction that the audience feels after watching so much alien, robot or alien robot action; the urban equivalent, if you will, of a volcano blowing its top.

Re: #31 - Chat: The Avengers

For those wondering what was going on with me, I had just finished a really difficult project, was glad to be free, drank too much, ate too little, and long story short I barely remember doing the second half of THOR or any of this recording. I hope it's more amusing than obnoxious, I'd hate to have ruined some otherwise good eps. As I said on Twitter, alcohol & I have decided to see other people for a while.

Re: #31 - Chat: The Avengers

So with all the positive reviews of The Avengers (and being a fan of some of Joss's other work), I was thinking of seeing the movie this weekend with some friends. Only problem is that none of us are comic book fans and haven't followed the other movies leading up to this (I've seen most of the Iron Man films). I have heard that the film might be not work as well for people who aren't familiar with the material so I am wondering what I need to know going into this film.

Here is what I know:

Iron Man - rich inventor who wears a robot suit to punch his enemies?
Captain America - Super army soldier created to punch Nazis?
Hulk - gets angry, turns green and punches people?
Thor - A Norse god?
Black Widow - ?
Hawkeye - ?
Nick Fury - is played by Samuel Jackson?

I'm hope that's enough to be able to enjoy and follow the film but is there anything else I need to be aware of?

Re: #31 - Chat: The Avengers

The best bit of your post is when you say you have seen 'most' of the Iron Man films. As there are only 2 of them does this mean you have only seen the first one? (just messing) big_smile

You should probably see Thor and Captain America. Things will make more sense that way. smile

Re: #31 - Chat: The Avengers

I only watched Iron Man 2 while I was doing some VFX work and it never interested me enough to try to closely follow the film, so I can't pretend to be knowledgeable about it. Anyway, looks like we've got some work ahead of us.

If you have no interest in the Iron Man films you will have no interest in The Avengers. They are clearly not the films for you smile

Re: #31 - Chat: The Avengers

Perhaps I have misrepresented myself - I enjoyed the Iron Man films and I thought there were a lot of fun scenes in the second one. But if you were to ask me what Black Widow's role in the film was, I would have trouble telling you.  smile

Re: #31 - Chat: The Avengers

You should see CAPTAIN AMERICA and, somewhat unfortunately, THOR, as the plots of both of them tie fairly directly into the events of AVENGERS. Keep in mind that although AVENGERS doesn't have a number next to its title, it's properly considered the fourth or fifth movie in a series and therefore can't be expected to do too much hand-holding for the uninitiated.

Black Widow had no proper role in IM2, but has a more to do in AVENGERS.

Thors story directly leads into the Avengers film. Without seeing it you won't know whom or why.

You say that then say you enjoyed both Iron Man films, so I think you can understand why I was confused. Or it is possible I am just very easily confused. Anyway, you should watch Thor and Captain America like I said earlier. It'll be less confusing to you when you watch The Avengers. Thor is a bit of a mess but still watchable and both films should be watched to be able to follow the story in The Avengers. I personally think The Avengers is a better film than Thor and Cap smile

in response to Hollwood's/America's current fascination with blowing up/knocking down/destroying... buildings/skyscrapers/etc...
maybe it's a subconscious "fuck you, you knocked down our buildings, but, we still got back up and kicked your asses!!!" to terrorists. (?)

Re: #31 - Chat: The Avengers

Thanks for the advice. I'll probably check out Captain America and Thor first.

(At the risk of quibbling) As far as my feelings on Iron Man 2, I passively watched it and had a couple of laughs (a few funny scenes with Robert Downey Jr and Sam Rockwell) but the story never engrossed me nor did any of the other characters really engage me. Thus the film fits my definition of being enjoyable but not super interesting.  smile

Hopefully later I will learn what the deal is with Black Widow.

Here's a fun thing - a real-life disaster evaluation company estimates that New York City took about 160 billion dollars of damage in Avengers.

You didn't miss anything, Iron Man 2 is not that good. The first is greatly superior. Black Widow worked undercover for SHEILD as Tony's assistant. That's basically it, her role in The Avengers has nothing to do Iron Man 2. All you need to know is, she's an assassin/spy. Hawkeye makes a brief appearance in Thor but all you need to know about him is that he too is an assassin. There is a lot to mention and we could do it here but it's probably best you just watch the films, if possible. Who knows, you may like them smile

TIL the 2011 Japanese earthquake/tsunami was almost as expensive as an alien invasion. Yikes.

My favorite part is the implication that every time we've seen a fictitious NYC struck with a disaster, it's been the same fictitious NYC. The fictitious New Yorkers still living there are hardcore as fuck, I'd've been out of there by '98 at the latest.

(Also explains why an inordinate percentage of FNYC's population appears to be construction workers.)

Re: #31 - Chat: The Avengers

The next destroy-New-York movie should have a moment where the heroes walk down the street, looking at the sky in concern... and all the storekeepers start closing shop and pulling the metal shutters closed.  "Aw crap, here we go..."

Re: #31 - Chat: The Avengers

Yeah, after 30+ years of this shit constantly happening you'd think they'd have figured out better city-wide disaster protocols than "run around panicking."

Re: #31 - Chat: The Avengers

What I want to see in a movie like that is the group of Korean store owners standing their ground with rifles on top of their stores during the disaster. Like we saw in the 1992 L.A. Riots.
