Re: Cool Trailers

They would be idiots to pull that in the second movie, we've barely developed the two of them as friends, it would be completely un-earned. Also, while it looks sexy as hell (and less shaky-camy thank god), this looks even less like Star Trek than the reboot was. It just seems so lazy to me to go "ok what's popular now? Dark Knight, and an evil antagonist who's come for revenge, and action and explosions". I get it, you're spending 200 million dollars you gotta play to the market, but I'd be way more stoked about this if they played up the exploration and going where no man has gone before angle....you know..the thing that Star Trek is actually supposed to be about. This looks more like Mass Effect to me than classic Trek.

It looks like a fucking awesome action movie, I just wish it wasn't called Star Trek.

Re: Cool Trailers

Couldn't care less how much it looks like Star Trek. I'd rather they do something new with the material than pander to fanboys by doing the same thing over again.

Re: Cool Trailers

My point though is that they ARE pandering, just pandering to what is trendy now. Obviously it's only a trailer, but just off that, it looks extremely similar to Dark Knight and Skyfall in terms of a "dark" story setup, and aesthetically it's going for the Mass Effect crowd. A classical "to-the-stars" exploration story would be way more original, ballsy, and novel in today's movie market, but they're playing it safe by going to the action crowd.

Again, nothing necessarily wrong with that if it's a good movie, but we should acknowledge that that's what they're doing.

Re: Cool Trailers

I just hope they spend more time in their Starfleet uniforms than this teaser would seem to imply. I love those colorful TOS outfits. Black leather and trenchcoats I can see anywhere.

Re: Cool Trailers

Fascinating how we've got two incoming post-apocolyptic movies with big stars, but each comes across as being quite different. They look interesting, although I do think both trailers show and reveal far too much.

First up is After Earth with Will Smith.

Then Oblivion with Tom Cruise.

Unpopular opinion: I will never understand the hate for Gore Verbinski. He is easily on my top 10 list for my favorite directors.

I'm not so sure. Remember Brave? The trailer made it look kinda cool, but the actual plot of the movie was completely different, and had nothing to do with the trailer at all.

The thing that scares me the most about that trailer is "From the team that brought you... [Pirates of the Caribbean logo]."  Really? You need to so us a logo now? Are we that stupid as a species and we can't read a title anymore?   hmm

Fucking YES that Man of Steel trailer looks awesome.

Re: Cool Trailers

Oblivion marks the second film in a row in which Tom Cruise plays a character called Jack. Last time he played a 'Jack' was back in 1985, now he's playing two in a row.

I am so bored.

Man Of Steel trailer doesn't really make me want to watch it. Feels way too melancholy for a superman movie.

Re: Cool Trailers

I am so fucking down for Man of Steel. It looks like Snyder toned his style way down, and I actually love the look of this. Gone is the awful CG artificiality of Watchmen and Sucker Punch, this thing looks super tactile, almost Terrence Malick in spots. Super pumped for this now.

There has always been an undercurrent of melancholy to Superman.  He's always lamented the outsider feeling and longed for connection to his Kryptonian roots.  Anytime the Bottle City of Kandor is mentioned, that melancholy is palpable.

Wait, did Pa Kent just say "maybe you should have let a bus of school children DIE"?

That caught my attention too. Is it just edited to sound that way? Is there dialogue in between because they do cut away or is Pa Kent a heartless bastard in this version?

At the end of the trailer, Will Smith should have said...

I really like that line, that's a ballsy statement for them to put in there. "If it means the rest of your life spent in a government lab somewhere, maybe you should have."

I like it too, like I say, it caught my attention. It makes sense that he'd worry about Clark in that way smile

Re: Cool Trailers

I also really like that line. It indicates that they're fleshing out Ma and Pa Kent beyond their down-to-earth homey wisdom. Hopefully that holds true for all the characters.

Re: Cool Trailers

Oh fuck yea.

And the only reason I'm not horribly dejected thinking it will be just another Transformers things blow up movie is Guillermo.

Fingers crossed he can can pull this thing off.

EDIT: ALthough yeah, the Glados rip is a little weird.

Also... why on earth would you need 2 pilots trussed up for a machine that is built with only 2 arms and 2 legs?

Re: Cool Trailers

My only question in regards to the trailer is where, exactly, is the dong port so I can make sweet love to it for the rest of the week, and all other weeks until the movie is here.
