Topic: Doc Challenge. I'm in. Who wants to help?

I did the Doc Challenge about 6 years ago and had a lot of fun with it. This year I want to do it again, and am asking for volunteers from anyone LA based (or beyond, if the work is capable of being farmed out).

What is the Doc Challenge?  It's a 5 day film festival but unlike other film contests, it is 100% for documentaries only.  More info here:  http://docchallenge.org/News/save-the-d … -back.html

I will Produce, Direct, and do some of the Editing, but we'll need plenty of warm bodies for camera, grip, score, narration (possibly), titling, craft, PA's, and the like.  Registration opens soon and the dates are in March as noted on the link.

I'm not in the LA area, but if you need any work farmed out, I'm here. I think you have a decent idea of my skills.

I also just got a nice new mic if you need narration type stuff and think my voice would work.

Eddie, I'm currently expanding my motion graphics reel, let me know if you want any graphics or animated lower thirds doing.

Harrell has an outstanding voice for narration, and naturally I'm down to do what I can with motion graphics and music.

Re: Doc Challenge. I'm in. Who wants to help?

THanks for the interest guys.

So it's 5 days starting Feb 28th (one week after my birthday) to March 4.  The way it works is at a certain time on the 28th, all the teams (FYI, our team name will be the name of my production company, Team Laser Fist) will get emailed the genre of doc that they must do, as well as the theme.  Our base of operations will be my guest house, and all local volunteers should plan to be at my house at that specific time (non locals can join us via skype) for the announcement.  Once we know theme and genre, we all will start brainstorming and researching ideas that we know we have a shot of executing based on whats within driving distance from LA.  Once we're decided on topic and approach, then we hit the ground running.  If Jeff is down, I'd like him to be parked at home base (aka Laser Fist Mountain) where he can oversee the post workflow and start ingesting and logging footage as it comes in.  Teague, in collaboration with whoever wants to help from remote locations, can start fiddling with the score, either from home base or the Cahuenga Labs.

I'll need someone with actual Producer experience, as well as a couple writers who have some (though not necessarily a lot) of experience with writing for non-fiction filmmaking.  If you're a writer who's never done this and want to try, I can work with you a bit on how the process is different before we start.

One last note.  In 2007 I entered this and did all the jobs myself.  I was doing it just for the experience of doc filmmaking in 5 days.  This year I'm out to win.  Behave accordingly.

I have been told I have a face for radio. I also have a friend with close to professional grade recording equipment.

Do you have a topic in mind?

God loves you!

I have potential ideas, but the whole point of the challenge is that they assign genre and theme the day the contest begins.  So while I know interesting people, if my genre ends up being technological and my theme ends up being religion...I'll have to scramble to find something.

If it's technological, I may be able to help.

Registration opened today, and I'll be registering Team Laser Fist on Thursday.  I'd like to start compiling email address for those interested.  Message me contact I to or email me at laserfistmedia@gmail.com

I'm trying to come up with one topic idea for each genre.  I can't officially approach anyone until the contest starts, but if you've got an idea for tech, I'd love to hear it.

Re: Doc Challenge. I'm in. Who wants to help?

Unfortunately, my limited skillset is on the production side of things so I couldn't be much help given my distant location, but I imagine getting some post-production help from this side of the Atlantic will give you extra time thanks to the timezone difference. I only wish I could be of service myself (I figure you'll have enough minds around already for brainstorming ideas).

I'm been dragging my heels for years about getting into editing and the like, so this has really motivated me to explore this. So thanks I guess. Wish you all the best and I hope you are able to tell the story of the making of the thing on the forums/an intermission.

Drew, I might actually take you up on that.  I have some stupidly talented friends in Chicago, and I have a few ideas that might require them as subjects.

Re: Doc Challenge. I'm in. Who wants to help?

Just got it.  I'll answer here since I'm...already here.  We don't know what the topic will be until the day the competition starts.  We are given a theme (2012 was Cycles, 2011 was Dreams, I think) and 2 genre's, one of which we must use.  Genre's include anything from 1st person to Historical to experimental.  We are strictly prohibited from picking our topic before Feb 28.  We can, however, brainstorm potential ideas.

With this in mind, I'm going to have a few people over very soon to help me brainstorm some potential.  I'd like to come up with at least 2 viable options for each genre.  The killer might be the theme, as the theme assigned might not work with certain ideas.

I'll pitch what I can from here. I'm good at spitballing but need help with the execution and technical details.

Re: Doc Challenge. I'm in. Who wants to help?

Here's a copy paste of the Genre's.  Over the weekend, I identified a subject that I can use for either 1st Person, Sports, or Biographical.  There are a couple genre's, like Music and Art, that I'm drawing a bit of a blank on.

1st Person
Told from the point of view of the Director - either through off camera narration or an on-camera presence.

Art
Focuses in some way on art and/or artists.

Biography/Character Study
A full account of the facts of the life of a particular person, or closely related group of people (Biography) or an exploration of a single character's personality and current life situation (Character Study).

Experimental
The application of innovative techniques to non-fiction material - experimenting with new ideas, forms, techniques and expressions. An exploration of how the camera can emulate and/or enhance visual and audio perception.

Historical
Focuses on stories of past events and/or people.

Music
Focuses in some way on music and/or musicians.

Nature/Environmental
Focuses on an aspect of the natural physical world, including animals, plants, landscapes, etc.

Social Issue/Political
Focuses on a social and/or political issue.

Science/Technology
Focuses on science or technological issues.

Sports
Focuses on events and/or people involved in sporting activities (an active diversion requiring physical exertion and competition.)

OK, any local DiF'ers that want to help out, I'm having a pre-pro/brainstorming session at Laser Fist HQ (aka, my guest house) this Thursday, Jan 24th at 8:30 pm pst.

I'm going to see if there is a way we can set up web streaming for out of town volunteers.
