Re: Man of Steel

Just saw this.  Some stuff I dug, most I felt let down by.  I really thought the trailer was amazing.  The movie didn't really bear that out.  Ah well.  I agree with Trey in that I enjoyed it more than any other big name superhero movie this summer, so there's that.  But one thing I haven't seen addressed in this thread:  Did anyone else really feel like Michael Shannon's portrayal of Zod kind of, I dunno... sucked?  It was flat, uninspired, almost clumsy, I thought.  Was that just me?

No, it's not just you. I wouldn't go far as to say his portrayal sucked but I'm scratching my head at the praise he is getting from some people. He just looked pissed off and shouted a lot, he didn't have any of Terence Stamp's charisma, I'd be more wary of his Zod than of Shannon's. I'd just tell Shannon's Zod to calm the fuck down. Stamp brought more menace to the role by not acting like a spoilt teenager. I've had people shout at me while being inches from my face before, Nu-Zod wouldn't intimidate me, Old Zod would just have to glare and I'd be shitting myself.

Nah, I'm more of a Spider-man type smartarse, well, when I was younger. Or Deadpool, I'd be a Scottish Deadpool. "Ah'm the Merc wi' the mooth, ya bunch of cuntin' pansies, ye!"

Because Superman is more about fathers and sons than mothers and sons. Not that his mothers weren't important to his development, but Superman's two dads had the biggest impact on who he is. That's what this movie chose to focus on, anyway.

Re: Man of Steel

I find it interesting that recent films have explored more of a father-son dynamic, but in a distant or absent father motif rather than a generational passing of the torch motif. Fascinating smile
