Topic: "The Hell With This" podcast...

(note: updated the title to "The Hell With This" - formerly known as the untitled Mark and Chad podcast.)

I'll keep this all contained to one thread, but... Myself and Mark Heiliger started a podcast we've been mulling over for ages.  Rather than sit around and try to figure something classy and good out, we decided just to shut up and record whatever.  Our goal, for the most part, has been to focus on lesser-known films, cult, art-house, indie, foreign, whatever... you know, the kind of shit that friends in your head would never touch.

Episode ONE starts with a little podcast on the 2010 movie "Monsters", directed by Gareth Edwards (Star Wars: Rogue One). Figured it was a timely selection, and a great little movie thru-out. Now, if you HAVEN'T SEEN "Monsters", don't fret completely - we start our episodes by simply gearing up for the screening, talking expectations, etc, for approximately 15 minutes before we stop to watch the movie (without you) - so you can always listen up until that point and decide if you actually want to listen further or stop to watch the movie. We'll see how this goes.

Oh, and we'll have a title for the podcast soon...

Performers of note: Scoot McNairy and Whitney Able. Special mention of Mario Zuniga Benavides, the awesome "ticket-seller" character, who has never acted in anything else.

Can confirm.  neutral

I have seen "Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains," though, so, dig me. (Don't. Chad showed it to me. This is as close to a textbook example of cheating as there has ever been.)

Anyway, I haven't heard anything from the podcast yet, but my instinct is "watch this space" — these might be movies you didn't grow up with, but even sight-unseen, I'd happily endorse diving into some strange new movies with these guys. Both of 'em are smart and funny, both have solid and wide-ranging taste in movies, both have been working in the film industry for a decade plus, and — not for nuthin' — both were founding members of the depraved colony that became Cahuenga Labs. These are some motherfuckers from the trench.

Re: "The Hell With This" podcast...

OKAY, a little late release for today, but here's our untitled podcast for the week, episode 2, as we cover the 1980's cult music film, "Ladies and Gentlemen The Fabulous Stains". This is a movie that I saw upon it's 2010 re-release on DVD and secretly loved. It's not exactly a great film, but it has some pretty iconic moments and some good scenes worth seeing. The cast is still relevant to this day. "Lost" for 30 years, "Ladies and Gentlemen the Fabulous Stains" finally had a real release in 2010 for the first time.

Posting this magical podcast a few days early because I'll be out of town on our regular Sunday to release it.  So... Merry Christmas?  This week's movie is "RUNAWAY" - a Mark Heiliger favorite - and wonderful cheeseball action affair that you've likely never heard of.  It's got Tom Selleck and, well, what else do you need to know?  Oh yeah, and it's written & directed by none other than Michael Crichton.  WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?

New Episode is up!

We debated whether or not it was a good idea to delve THIS DEEP into the world of European "art-house" film so early on, but hey, this is one of the best works by one of my personal favorite directors, Krzysztof Kieslowski.  The film is "The Double Life Of Veronique", easily one of the most beautiful films of the past 30 years, but unseen by most.  Starring Irene Jacob (currently seen in Showtime's "The Affair"), "The Double Life of Veronique" is a borderline fantasy film - well, no... it IS a fantasy film, in so many ways.  It doesn't feel of this Earth, and the world we experience in the film is wholly unique to Kieslowski's vision as a storyteller.  I suggest you check it out, even if only to study the cinematography.

Oh man... We talked about it.  It MIGHT happen in the future, but we'll probably give it some space before coming back to Kieslowski again.  We've talked about taking on TV shows, since our format kinda allows us to.  I'll mention it to Mark and see what he says.  You may have to sit in for a cameo on that one.  wink

Ah, yes, the modern day treasure that is "Hobo with a Shotgun".  Mark and I try to figure out exactly where this movie spawned from (do we fail?  We don't know, because we don't research anyway).  Rutger Hauer plays it straight in this insanely crazy grindhouse flick.

Re: "The Hell With This" podcast...

Straight from the dvd-rip library of Mark Alan Heiliger, comes the HBO classic(?) "Cast a Deadly Spell", starring Fred Ward, Clancy Brown and a fresh-faced Julianne Moore.  This wacky film touches a handful of genres, including: fantasy, noir, action, comedy, horror(?) - too many, frankly, but that's probably why it ended up on HBO instead of theaters.  This movie is produced by GALE ANNE HURD, right smack in the middle of her prime, btw, so yeah... not sure how I hadn't ever heard of this one until now, but it's worth a watch (or a listen).

Re: "The Hell With This" podcast...

I love this movie.  Mark's never seen it.  WHAT WILL HAPPEN NOW?  Well, a podcast... naturally.  We didn't plan it this way, but this is our seventh episode, continuing the trend of ONE of us has seen it, ONE of us hasn't.  "Things to do in Denver When You're Dead" is quintessential 90's flavor when it comes to indie films of the era.  Starring just about everyone, this movie is pretty damn quotable, and extremely sentimental to boot.  If you haven't seen the movie, I suggest listening to the opening, then the audio clip trailer --- then go watch the movie -- THEN come back and finish the podcast, or we'll ruin it for you.  That goes for pretty much ANY of our podcasts.  The hope is to get YOU PEOPLE to watch at least one or two of these movies (that you've probably never heard of).  If we accomplish that, well... GO US.

Re: "The Hell With This" podcast...

"Just One of the Guys" - straight from the 80's (and completely unbeknownst to me), this movie lurked in the shadows for the past 30 years (where it mostly continues to live).  Apparently I'm the last one to have heard about it - though it is one of Mark's favorites (he can defend himself further, if he so chooses).  This is a quirky sex-swap comedy with a low budget and nobody (mostly) of recognizable fame, with the exception of William Zabka (Karate Kid) and Sherilyn Fenn.  It's worth seeing, but not spectacular (Mark might disagree).  That said, I enjoyed it.

Note 1: Mark's film professor actually directed this, so he's got some insight into the making of it.

Note 2: Releasing this two days early.

NEW EPISODE.  "About Time" (2013)

I had to force this one on Mark, more or less, because honestly who wants to watch a british rom-com about time travel?  (don't answer that, british folk)  Point is, not many people did see this one - even if it is probably the most mainstream film we've watched this far.  "About Time" is a wonderfully funny flick, and if you haven't seen it - you SHOULD suck it up and watch it.  Just don't judge this one on the poster, because... yeah.  Seriously, what a horribly misrepresentative ad campaign.  At least make it to the audio clip I've edited into the episode, because that should help enlighten you to the type of humor that this movie possesses.
