Yep. That happened. I nearly choked on my lunch, and almost peed my pants. This, people, is how surprises should be done.

Which now makes me wonder what else we are in for, since this surely can't be the biggest surprise?

Re: Doctor Who is awesome, yeah?

Just spoiling the whole thing, cause eh.

SPOILER Show

Not surprisingly, I think I'm missing something.

The persistent rumour since John Hurts reveal is that he's a regeneration between 8 and 9, so that was to be expected. Was it just the fact that they showed it or what?

Either way, for such a key moment, it was really poorly written or at least executed. Either I'm missing about 6 seasons of context as to who the hell that girl is and the why the sisters speak in overdrawn captain obvious dialouge, and why there seems to be an over-acting field over the whole planet (Granted, this is entirely possible) but if this is meant to excite nuwhovians who haven't watched classic stuff it does a really shit job of it.

Still, I'm fucking pumped for the actual episode, and am so fracking excited to see the War Doctor and time war stuff, this just felt like it was made for somebody else to be excited about (Which granted it probably was).

@BDA:

I think at lot of your angst comes down to the fact that it's a webisode with a compressed timeframe and lower budget than the show. I mean, the whole thing takes place on, what, three tiny sets? I agree with you; it would have had more resonance if the scenes were longer and had more time to breathe and the acting was a little less bombastic. Although, this is Doctor Who after all. When isn't the acting bombastic in its climactic moments?

  Show
I think the big deal was that no one really thought they'd ever see Paul McGann reprise the doctor, many people assumed we'd never see what happened to the Eighth Doctor, nor had the show yet made it clear just who John Hurt really was in-show.

Persistent rumours or not, until it's in the show proper, it's not part of the story. I was genuinely surprised about most of the revelations, probably because I don't follow Doctor Who outside of sitting down and watching the show itself.

My secret hope for Day of the Doctor is a flashback to Hurt's regeneration into Eccleston's Doctor. I don't even care if all we get is a shot of Eccleston with no dialogue. I'd be happy enough for him to just stand there for 2 seconds with a sad look on his face. And I mean the real Eccleston. Like, went-to-the-set-and-filmed-a-new-scene Eccleston. No more disembodied voices or reflections in windows. I want the real deal. If that happened, it would fill in the palpable gap I've always felt in the series. I know in my heart of hearts though, it's not going to happen.

You know what bugs me most?

  Show
The title "The War Doctor". I hate it. In the webisode, he calls himself "The Warrior". Much better. I know they credited John Hurt as "The War Doctor", but I hope to god they call him "The Warrior" in the show.

Think about it: The Doctor. The Master. The Valeyard. The Corsair. The..... War Doctor? Honestly?

Re: Doctor Who is awesome, yeah?

BDA: It's a classic era fan service. If all you've seen is NuWho, then you probably won't get why this is a big deal. Karn, and its sisterhood is also featured in "The Brain of Morbius" from Tom Baker's era.

Aural: It makes sense to name him the War Doctor. He's still himself, but more of a warrior. Plus, if all Time Lords had a single worded name, you'd start to run out after a while. The Stairmaster. The Ladle. The Edge. The Rock. And so forth.

Re: Doctor Who is awesome, yeah?

Tomahawk:

That may be the case, but I always thought that the handles the Time Lords used were for those who left Gallifrey and went out into the universe, those who had assignments or were adventurers. I certainly don't think all Time Lords chose a mantle.

And my interpretation is that he's not himself. He's not The Doctor anymore. He says:

  Show
"Warrior. I don't suppose there's any need for a doctor anymore. Make me a warrior, now."

Then at the very end:

  Show
"Doctor, no more."

[Edit] Also relevant: http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2013-11- … rts-doctor

And that's why War Doctor is stupid. I see it as the show cowing to the fear that people might not realize he is the Doctor, which is kind of insulting because we're all smart enough to know who he is.

Re: Doctor Who is awesome, yeah?

BDA- Nowt wrong with some fan service for fans of the classic series.

  Show
First- regarding the girl, The Doctor was distressed that she'd rather kill herself than be helped by a Timelord. He had tried so hard to avoid the war but ended up causing the death of an innocent anyway. He wanted to bring her back but when he couldn't, this pushed him over the edge. It's not the fact that we saw the regen (we actually, really, didn't) it was the fact that we saw WHY he chose to become the War Doctor, why he chose that path. Second- McGann only had the one movie as the Doctor but he was great, the fact that he was back was fantastic, it was a pretty big deal. I think it is great that they are re-introducing 'older' Doctors, McGann deserved more time in the role. Besides, why should 'NuWhovians' have all the fun? This is the anniversary after all big_smile

The Rani?

I wonder what the Doctor will call himself since he does not acknowledge this regeneration (perhaps because of the method he used to get it). So, for our sakes, calling him "War Doctor" makes sense but I think he will call himself something else.

Also, good short and incredibly effective, even for someone less familiar with Old Who.

Time and the Rani is a McCoy adventure. The sisterhood of Karn are the keepers of the light. Or, rather, the elixir of life.

Re: Doctor Who is awesome, yeah?

The Rani first showed up in a Colin Baker story. That they then put her in that horrible first McCoy story isn't her fault smile

  Show
we probably won't see a regeneration into Eccleston for the same reason Colin Baker refused to do that regeneration scene.

Just watched "An Adventure in Space and Time".

Wow. Just wow. That was some of the best television I've seen. David Bradley performed brilliantly, and as far as I can tell, they did Hartnell, and the show, justice.

I recommend to all Doctor Who fans interested in the making of the show the 'About Time' series of books, which tell about the making of each episode in great detail. For US fans, it goes into the various cultural influences on the show, the other TV series it was being compared to. The newest volume tackles the first two seasons of the new Who.

Re: Doctor Who is awesome, yeah?

The Adventure in Space and Time documentary was terrific and rather sad at the end.

The 50th Anniversary Special was terrific too, if a bit wobbly. Billie Piper is the Ghost of Christmas Past as a weapon of mass destruction? Odd choice of motivation.

Warning: I'm probably rewriting this post as you read it.

SPOILERS

The vibe I got, and thus my personal canon, was that she was lying about being the Moment's interface and it was actually Bad Wolf Rose. Made sense to me, given that she saw how torn up Nine was about his actions in the Time War and had the power to do something about it for a brief moment when she was a God.

Anyway, loved the special. Some of it didn't work as well as it could have, but over all it was pretty great. The fanboy in me wishes we'd actually seen Davison, (C) Baker, McGann, and Eccleston, but that would have really crowded out the story. Squealed when Capaldi showed up for a second.
