Re: Soundtrack recommendations
I'd recommend checking out the Coraline soundtrack. It might not be what you're looking for, but I love it to death.

Re: Soundtrack recommendations
One of my faves is the Last of the Mohicans soundtrack by Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman - sometimes I put it on when I'm writing. Generally ominous without being too bombastic.

Re: Soundtrack recommendations
I would add Ghosts I - IV by NIN, and the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo soundtrack.
Oh, it's vocal but still fits - Le Fil, by Camille.

The soundtracks for Sunshine (John Murphy) and Alexander (Vangelis) are among my favourites. Murphy's Adagio in D Minor/Capa's jump score is phenomenal (and sends shivers up my neck too).
Oh and Last of the Mohicans was pretty great too (Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman) - one of the first albums I ever owned (along with the Top Gun soundtrack).

Michael McCann's Deus Ex: Human Revolution soundtrack is pure cyberpunk atmospheric madness. It's a videogame score but don't let that turn you off.

I'd throw Basil Poledouris's Conan the Barbarian safely in with your LOTR music, I adore that soundtrack. Give something like "The Atlantean Sword" a listen if you're not already sold.
More recently, I've been enjoying some of the stuff off the Dredd soundtrack, check out "Ma Ma's Requiem" and "She's a Pass".

Re: Soundtrack recommendations
There are a couple of tracks in Trevor Jones' score for Excalibur that are good - the main theme being the one most probably remember (that rousing piece that plays as the titular sword returns to the Lady of the Lake).
