Paranormal Activity. A great format to discuss found-footage filmmaking, and the process of a small indie movie becoming a blockbuster.

They could also do that with The Blair Witch Project, to be fair. Then talk about how bloody awful the sequel to that was big_smile

Re: Suggest a movie!

Psycho would be a good choice since it fits the theme, is extremely influential, has a pretty interesting movie structure, and for god's sake guys, how have you not done a Hitchcock film yet?!

I also really feel like you guys have gotta do another Carpenter commentary, and with so much of his stuff being horror I think now would be as good a time as any. Like I said, They Live would be great because of the abundant social commentary on display. If you wanted to go more pure horror In The Mouth of Madness would be a good choice.

I hadn't considered Prince of Darkness......if you think you can explain what the fuck is going on in that movie you guys are welcome to go for it.

Someone mentioned Scream, I think I would almost rather you guys do that then Cabin in the Woods, because in many ways Scream is doing the exact same thing as Cabin in the Woods, except it got there 20 years earlier, and actually works as a scary horror film. Also you've kinda already done a Cabin in the Woods discussion.

Also, I second Blair Witch Project. If you're going to have a discussion about found footage horror, it makes a lot of sense to do the movie that started the trend. If you wanted to do a modern found-footage, I think Rec is a far more effective and interesting example than Paranormal Activity, both in terms of concept and execution.

Re: Suggest a movie!

An absolute favorite around Halloween is the original "Fright Night," (1985). I like the idea of a "compare and contrast" bit with the remake from 2011. Or, pair it with "The Lost Boys" (1987) to make for a sweet, blood-sucking, '80s Double Bill.

Re: Suggest a movie!

Well, Salem's Lot is one of those all you young kids have ONLY seen on video, so don't remember it started on TV.

I too vote for at least one Carpenter title. Prince of Darkness is my favorite, due to the subject matter (what if God, the real one, was on the anti-matter side of things and thus "evil"?). Blair Witch would be a good one to go into how editing can create a movie out of nothing. Elm Street, yes, please, it needs to be done.

I'd toss in one classic, The Haunting, an incredible example of what you can do without actually showing anything, and in fact leaving open the possibility that NOTHING is in fact happening.

At some point you guys should do a J-Horror film, and The Ring is as good as any to stand for the entire genre.

As for Twilight Zone... This would be a Trey special, I assume smile

Re: Suggest a movie!

House of the Devil is a good modern flick that hasn't been suggested yet, and it's on netflix instant, though it's quite a slow burn of a movie and I imagine a commentary would have to be ten minutes of "This is SOOOO 80's", about an hour of "This movie sure does take it's time..." and then 20 or so minutes of "SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT! FINALLY!!"

But I liked it. Very obviously low budget but really well made flick that doesn't focus on jump scares or gore. The blood is really being filmed, there's some nice makeup effects, camera work and lighting and it's actually kinda scary.

In the mouth of Madness is a good flick, but that one's got a pretty slow middle bit as well that might not be good for doing commentary over.

Psycho would be a good one, though kinda hard to add much to the discussion about that film (The Kane Dilemma).

You've also never done From Dusk Till Dawn. That's technically a horror film, right?

  • Stir of Echoes

  • Fargo

Stephen Kings It. I'm positive the panel secretly loves clowns.
House of 1,000 Corpses. I crush on this pretty hard, as it's Rob Zombies writer / director coming out party.

Re: Suggest a movie!

Halloween could lead into interesting talk about the slasher movies as a whole, (Nightmare, Friday, Hellraiser and the like) and how they seem to have diverged away from actual horror, instead focusing on gore bloody imagery which has desensitized most audiences to the point which they cheer for the monster to kill the shitty victims.

Paranormal Activity could be interesting if it was done in a contrast with an over the top slasher. It also serves as a pretty good example in minimalism where all that happens is a book falls off a shelf and the audience is scared shitless.

Trey probably has some interesting stories about Pet Sematary 2.

Re: Suggest a movie!

1st 2 Pet Sematarys would be nice to do.  There are of course the 1st movies in the Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street and Halloween series.  Even add the 1st Child's Play & Texas Chainsaw Massacre if you want.

For more "recent" movies, Paranormal Acitivty or Blair Witch Project would be interesting and you could talk about the whole "found footage" affects the horror genre.

Agree that IT should be be heavily considered as it was a movie that freaked me out when I was younger & is still worth checking out.

Other movies that I would like to suggest are "American Werewolf in Londown", "Scream", "The Howling" & "Maximum Overdrive"

SCREAM, because it really is a good movie.
28 DAYS LATER, because you need an ACTUAL reference to Going To The Mansion.
THE RING, because it's a good film, that ...isn't scary at all, nevermind that.

I suck at this, though. I never did enjoy horror flicks. I never could wrap my head around why I should be scared at all while watching them. The only one that actually got me feeling slightly uncomfortable, was Silent Hill, before it got ridiculous.

And interesting because at least one of them doesn't like it.  It would be interesting for them to talk about the Halloween remake too, in regards to the change in slashers you mentioned. There's a rape scene in the remake for no reason whatsoever. Well done, Rob Zombie.
