In my capacity as 2nd assistant to the DP's PA, I can tell you it's about 4 lines.

I think we're looking at the ESB-Emperor  head and shoulders hologram, except you'll be coming from a wrist projector, and smallish to maybe just life-size. Also shoot your hooded self from 180 deg behind and your back-right quadrant for the reverse angles.

Check the rough cut for the eye lines, or: 1st line you'll be looking maybe 45 degrees up at Niken, the final lines you're on a level with Straya. Or do Holograms not have eyelines? Maybe shadow out your eyes to avoid the question?

Doing a Sidious holo?

Have the hood pulled down over the eyes?

Or, if you have a paintball mask you can throw that on with a hood.

God loves you!

If it can wait until tonight, I'll do the dark master.  How many lines we talkin?

That would be great!

EDIT: script

There are three or four lines:

  • Good work, my young apprentice. Now,
    fulfill your training... and destroy
    her.

  • I am impatient, my apprentice--

  • Your master has taught you well, little
one. You would make a worthy apprentice.
Join me on the dark side.

  • [mutters in impotent rage and cuts communication]

This is the hologram effect I imagined. If it's video pasted onto that semi-transparent plane, then background is less of a worry.

The first person to get their footage in goes into the cut, and we move forward.

I think the Australian is getting impatient.

Australians have many virtues. Patience, however, is not one of them.

Okay, I guess I'll try to do it this weekend.

Is there a new rough cut with my other suggestions?

Re: Zarban's lightsaber battle project

Okay. I did it against a blue wall I hoped would work for bluescreen technique, but it's probably too shiny. I also shot in full light as demanded by Dave and Chris, which makes my turban look a little like silk pajamas wrapped around my head, which *snort* it is totally not *pushes glasses up on nose*. However, since I worked alone, I'm afraid it's a touch out of focus....

Still, probably workable.

I cannot say, for I got exactly 1 frame and then the dl failed.

Keying that blue and leaving the turban is not going to be easy unfortunately.

No. Thats just the first moment, when i'm activating the camera. I lean back and get a broader shot.

Let me know where the problems are, and if they're serious, i can just redo the scenes this weekend. It didn't occur to me that teal against blue would be a problem; they looked quite different at the time. I could shoot it against a near black background or near white; and/or i can change the costume if necessary.

Re: Zarban's lightsaber battle project

Recorded stuff. It's in 4K, it's 5GB. You want me to downsample and send you a ...well, sample?

I'm doing it anyway. I'll update this post once it's on YouTube. Apparently, 4K takes ages to encode.

Here we go. It's rough, it's not perfectly lit, but I did it all alone, and in my bedroom.

Upon watching it myself, I realise I can tweak the angle and the hood a bit more to have a more appealing shot, but the performance is pretty much spot on where I'm at with the character. I've done some basic tweaking to the colour of it to see how far I can take it to reduce the amount of roto necessary, and the 4K material is 100mbps, but if I go down to 1080p, I can get a solid 200mbps stream to work with, that also doesn't have a 2.3x crop factor (it's 2x, so not exactly ultra-wide, but it's something)

Let me know if this is usable as it is, and if so, what takes you want, and I'll render it out with an alpha matte so you can apply whatever hologram effects to it you see fit.

Unless you want me to do the vfx for it myself, in which case that's cool too.

That's fantastic! Your voice is terrific! And there's literally no way you could go too evil considering Ian McDiarmid's performances.

Yeah, some technical person will have to answer that. Performancewise, I think it's great.

Re: Zarban's lightsaber battle project

I have a question for you Zarban:
Are you looking for the standard Star Wars universe 3D hologram effect?
The sample you referenced above would work for the interface and such for the communicators, but the "real" holograms projected in-universe are not flat. ref: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUncfeCeYZ8

If you're going for authentic, then Tom needs to shoot himself from the angles that are correct for the shots he'll be put into. If not, then the takes Tom has just presented could be included on the flat holo-panel as a 2d image, barring any notes from the VFX crew.

Re: Zarban's lightsaber battle project

Yeah, the whole idea here was to use whatever was easy to do and still looked cool. That flat hologram I referenced on the initial post is perfectly fine. It's actually necessary for the way we shot the later moments with Straya manipulating things on screen to track Darth Voyne's location.

Re: Zarban's lightsaber battle project

Besides, if I'm to make it 100% correct, I'd have to matchmove my shots to what's already been shot on set.

As for delivery:

PNG?

Audio?

If I'm matching anything to real plates, I'll need the separate plates for comping.
