Actual. Made up is boring, "oh gods, I had this date where Starscream turned up and started singing Vietnamese folk music kareoke, then the fucking sun exploded, again".

I'll sneak in on the video game thing and say that I either want David Fincher to make a Half-Life movie or I want Zack Snyder to make an Assassin's Creed movie.

As for the "worst date" question...there was that one time that her twin brother showed up and hung out with us the whole time. That was pretty awkward.

Now you have to answer both.

EDIT: god the thread's derailing so fast right now. I will try to fix it!!

The obvious answers would be typical conspiracy theory fodder, like JFK, moon landings or 9/11. I feel, however, that those answers are already plainly obvious and people simply choose to ignore reality. I'd rather know who Jack the Ripper was, or where Amelia Earhart went down. Let's say Jack the Ripper.

EDIT AGAIN! I CHANGE MY ANSWER! ABIOGENESIS! I want to know exactly how, where, when life erupted on this planet / possibly the universe. However many of them there may be.

You get to hang out with anyone from history for an afternoon, talking about stuff and having lunch. Who do you hang out with? What do you talk about?

Re: Answer, ask.

It's crazy, I really dug deep and tried to figure out the answer for that, and the guy who won out is Orson Welles.

I'd talk about whatever the fuck he wanted to talk about. Glass of whiskey, cigar, Orson Welles. That's my answer.

If you could cast one actor as one character from a book you love, who would you cast as who?

Re: Answer, ask.

Tom Hiddleston as Aziraphale in Good Omens. It didn't click until I saw him doing press for Avengers, but he's absolutely perfect. But only with blonde hair.

By the way, read Good Omens. It's Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, writing together before they were big stars, satirizing the Biblical End of Days. It's an absolute riot, and probably my favorite book of all time.

Doug Jones as Wowbagger the Infinitely Prolonged. (But I mean really, who else do you get to play Wowbagger the infinitly prolonged?)

Someone else go.

Noah Wyle as Rincewind from... well any book that has Rincewind in it. (Discworld FTW!). Although if I had to pick one I'd go with The Colour Of Magic.

Seriously, give that guy a pointy hat and he's good to go:

Ok, if the question is still valid I'm going to cast an upcoming character from Game of Thrones.

Gerard Butler as Oberyn Martell.  Its not obvious casting, outside of being handy with a spear.  Depending on what you know of the character, there's some subtleties he could have fun with.

Light saber. This is the weapon of a Jedi Knight. Not as clumsy or random as a blaster; an elegant weapon for a more civilized age.

Assuming I can wield it without killing myself.
- Does not run out of ammo.
- Relatively silent.

Question: You can have one vehicle from real life for free. But you have to pay all maintenance cost of that vehicle out of your own pocket. What vehicle do you choose?

Ooh, I've always wanted an enclosed autogyro, but the storage and maintenance would probably drain me, and it probably wouldn't be as fun as I'd hope. Exotic cars are out both for maintenance costs and the fact that I live in a small town.

How about this: a 1959 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder REPLICA in red with an aluminum body.

The Gears of War gun that has a chainsaw for a bayonet.  Completely unrealistic and actually not practically helpful at all, but holy shit would that be fun.

You have to remake Game of Death.  Who do you put in Bruce Lee's spot, and who are the five bosses in the house?

Re: Answer, ask.

Tony Jaa to play Bruce Lee's role.  After seeing the Ong Bak films, I think he's got a good handle on the different styles of fighting.  1st floor- Dan Choupong.  2nd Floor- Nakamura Shido?  3rd Floor- Donnie Yen.  4th Floor- Jet Li.  5th Floor- Michel Qissi or a Younger Bolo Yueng??

Which movie do you believe is the perfect example of filmic storytelling?

Thor.

Re: Answer, ask.

Hana-Bi (Fireworks). Takeshi Kitano flick. There's very little dialogue going on, and what little of it is there isn't expository at all. It's a pretty minimalist film overall. It's about a guy who's a cop who has a wife dying of leukemia, and a partner who gets shot and paralyzed from the waist down. He finds the guy who shot his partner and kills him, getting one of his men killed in the process and he gets kicked off the force. Without a stream of income, he decides to take a loan from a loan shark so he can buy a junker car to use for a robbery where he gets a ton of money. He then takes his wife on, basically, their last holiday together while both the cops and the gangsters he screwed over tail after him. Meanwhile, his paralyzed ex-partner struggles with life in a wheelchair and thoughts of suicide. The film juxtaposes their two stories in a meaningful way that I won't go into.

99% of that plot is delivered to you with visuals. Even though I just told you the plot, I didn't actually give away the movie at all. It's not really about the plot, it's about the two guys and how their situations are similar and different. It's about the relationships and the lack thereof. It's one of the most emotional stories I've ever seen, yet the main character in particular has about one facial expression the whole time. I consider it to be one of the greatest films ever made. It's pretty much my favorite movie, tho, so I may be biased. Oh, look, it's a trailer!

Also, next person...  Same question. I like this question a lot.

Re: Answer, ask.

I don't know if I said it here or somewhere else a few days ago, but I think that Seven Samurai is in many ways the groundwork for every action/drama that came after it. You know all those movies you love? Seven Samurai is the best parts of all of those movies put together. So yeah, great storytelling.

You can make it so that one historically beleaguered film production actually got off the ground, but a classic film that did get made must disappear. Which films do you choose?

Re: Answer, ask.

Assuming by saying "get off the ground" you mean happened without said beleaguerment:

Dr Parnassus.

When I started hearing things and seeing things about DP I was...excited is not the right word... filled with childlike wonderment and glee. Everything about that concept is what I would love to see done properly in film, I have more than a few ideas that pull on similar ideas and concepts myself...and one day I will get to see them to fruition... so I was incredibly excited. To me it was on a level with what I thought Inception was going to be...except more. Hmm, it's really hard to put into words... but anyways yes...Dr Parnassus.

Also...that would have meant more Heath Ledger and depending on how this wish is interpreted...an avoidance or at least a forestalling of his death. So there's that.

As for the second half. 2001.

EDIT: Actually I have a question.

Top 3 (or more if you really like me) World Wars films/series/documentaries (Not counting BoB or The Pacific).

What do you mean exploiting the thread for my research's sake? me? never! tongue

And Ken Burns' fantastic documentary The War.

Re: Answer, ask.

Yeah, there are so many doc series about WW's I and II and very few standout.  I will take this moment however to plug History Channels "Patton 360" especially 104 (Rogue General) that yours truly edited.

Re: Answer, ask.

Dude's - Few of my favorites

  • The Longest Day

  • The Iron Cross (sometimes seen it as The Cross of Iron)

  • Das Boot

  • Tora! Tora! Tora!

  • Letters from Iwo Jima

  • First part of Saving Private Ryan...

  • World at War (Documentary)

I never thought Pacific was all that good. It tried to force disjointed elements into a cohesive narrative but it did not work for me at least. It had some elements I liked but it in no way managed to follow Band of Brothers, in scope, acting and story.
