Re: Doctor Who is awesome, yeah?

Saw third episode “A Town Called Mercy” and again it was a good one.  Didn’t have that whole ‘planet in jeopardy’ feel as it was just like the title says, a town.  One thing I particularly liked was that they showed that apparently this version of The Doctor is perhaps beginning to lose giving mercy and how having a companion(s) help keep him from going too far.

Ya all the people bitching about him killing people last episode should quiet down now, it's clearly intentional and the show-runners are acknowledging that he's starting to cross the line.

If we suddenly see this Doctor's adventures being watched by the the 6th Doctor at his trial, I will seriously consider worshiping the current creative team smile

I like what they are doing with the title this series-

Dinosaurs on a Spaceship

And the one for this week's ep was wood but I can't find a screencap yet.

Also, the intro sequence has been getting noticeably darker each week. Think it has something to do with the Doctor's character shift? I keep hearing the word "Valeyard" getting tossed around...

There are dark round marks and lines on it like wood, with one line going all the way across to suggest a panel of wood.....

Thanks for finding it, though smile

My bad, I guess having the prog recorded so I could freeze frame and zoom did give me an unfair advantage.  http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/miss_minty/Emotions/blush21.gif

Are they? I don't get the new episodes, but like I said if they're tying this in with the 6th Doctor I will be VERY impressed smile

Oh, not in-show, just by fans and such. And hey, I wouldn't be surprised if they start setting that up now. The Valeyard was supposed to be in between his 12th and 13th resurrections, right?

It was said in the final story of the "Trial of a Time Lord" season with the 6th Doctor.  I agree that it would be interesting if they started to touch upon that.

Re: Doctor Who is awesome, yeah?

Finished seeing the 2nd to last episode of this block of Doctor Who episodes and got to say that "The Power of Three" was a great way to set up for what's to come in the mid season finale.  It focused a good deal on Amy and Rory which I had no problem with as they don't always have to have The Doctor the absolute center of the episode.  Definite something to check out.

While it wasn't bad, I thought the climax had a too quick fix. It'll be interesting to see where they go from here, with next week's episode, though.

That's what we thought on this end, too - we were certain that was the false resolution, and somehow it was about to get much worse. But, nope. That was it.

Hooookay.

I do like the themes they're playing with, though, and am very anxious to see where they're going with them all next week.

Re: Doctor Who is awesome, yeah?

One thing to keep in mind is that this was the last episode that Karen Gilan & Arthur Darvill's filmed.  When they did the scene where the 3 of them entered the TARDIS & closed the door they hugged each other & cried.  In a way Power of Three was a prelude to the upcoming episode.

Got finished watching the mid/winner finale & have to say that I really enjoyed it.  The way that both Amy & Rory extied the series  was handled well.  It's sad that they're gone but they couldn't have a better swang song.

Now we have to wait until the Christmas special.

Yup. I was pleasantly surprised that they managed to tell such a complex story alongside the important character developments.

Ya, this episode is very much a spiritual sequel to "Blink", really liked how they used River's detective story.

I very much loved this episode. Coming out of it, however, my emotions were somewhere between

Re: Doctor Who is awesome, yeah?

Somehow I always end up the contrarian, but I must say I haven't been too pleased with Series 7 thus far. Certainly there are elements of each episode that I've liked, but they've been greatly out-weighted by other things I really, really didn't like.

My biggest problem has been the lack of any real sense of peril in every single episode. I haven't actually felt like our beloved characters are actually in any danger, so the emotional payoff at the end when everything turns out okay just isn't there. The Angels Take Manhattan is by far the worst offender, because at the end everything wasn't okay, so it felt even more dissatisfying .

  Show
Seriously, that image of the Statue of Liberty as an Angel in the teaser was so fucking ridiculous I almost turned the show off before the opening credits began. The whole opening sequence turned out to be a complete waste of time as the plot thread with Grayle was abruptly dropped as soon as we got all of our characters together again. It's just a convoluted mess. Knowing what Moffat has said comparing the relationship between Blink and the Time of Angels two-parter to Alien and Aliens, the sloppy writing in The Angels Take Manhattan follows right along making it the Alien 3 of the bunch.

Asylum, Power, and Manhattan all felt like they should have been two-parters to give us time for a proper set up and delivery. These were all episodes where the Doctor/Amy/Rory dynamic was really key to the story, which in my opinion means the Plot needs to be even more compelling, which means more time is needed. Dinosaurs and Mercy felt like they desperately needed some fat trimmed. All five episodes have felt pretty heavy-handed on the foreshadowing in the lead up to Amy and Rory's departure, but in Dinosaurs and Mercy it felt especially unnecessary. Mercy loses extra points for that tragic waste of Ben Browder.

So, yeah, overall I'm not feeling the Doctor too much right now.

Re: Doctor Who is awesome, yeah?

Why was that dude so mad at Steven Moffat on May 21, 2006?

I watched "The Power of Three" and "The Angels Take Manhattan" more or less back-to-back last night. The first was good, light character fun but not much of a mystery or adventure. I think it would have worked better as a Doctor-light episode, with the Ponds investigating the goings-on at the hospital while the Doctor was off on a wild goose chase looking for the source. ("A Town Called Mercy" would probably have worked better as the matching Pond-light episode anyway, with the alien doctor as the Doctor's pseudo-companion—<gasp> secrets and lies!) But if "The Power of Three" is going to be a family affair, it would have been nice to have River in it, and we could have a funny introductions gag where Brian insists that his last name isn't Pond and the Doctor insists that his last name isn't Song.

"The Angels Take Manhattan" was a lot of fun, and much more effective (for me, anyway) than the two-part angel story a while back. It took some time to realize that the Winter Quay really was gone, so Amy and Rory were free to go anywhere (and therefore could live a happy life and get River's book published). But with New York too unstable to rescue them, why couldn't the Doctor tell Amy to just travel to Chicago and he'd pick them up there? Emotionally, it worked well, but it also felt like the Doctor was giving up.

But I've had issues with Amy and Rory for quite a while. They've been thru much more personal, emotional trauma than any other new series companion. They really ought to have been ready to settle down and say goodbye to the Doctor several episodes ago. The Doctor normally chooses companions who have little family and nothing to lose for exactly the reason that they won't be missed. But here Amy and Rory were juggling jobs and adventuring, and it felt false.

Warning: I'm probably rewriting this post as you read it.
