Re: Zarban's lightsaber battle project

An RV interior with a bit of set dressing, shot at night, with interesting interior lighting would totally work. Plus we can drop in BG screens and shit for added fancy.

Anyway.

Jedi girl in woods tries to avoid a probe droid (live with prop in distance)

Having a prop would help for scale and lighting reference, but an all-CG probe would be cooler and much more flexible. This kind of thing is actually pretty easy to nail.

In general, let's make this shit happen. I wanna start planning teams and shit already.

(No, you're easily excited.)

It occurs to me that if ever the chaps get tired of the commentary game, we could throw together an independant production company *really* quickly.

I'm thrilled by the responses here, by the way. You will be making two little Star Wars fans (and one big one) very happy.

I arranged a surprise treasure hunt for my other niece and nephew when they were 10 and 12, and the younger two have been asking about one for themselves.

Warning: I'm probably rewriting this post as you read it.

Re: Zarban's lightsaber battle project

Okay! So, if I may.

1. Zarban.

When do you want to do this? What's your ideal timeframe?

You have a Rebel, can you (sometime before the actual shoot) throw me/us some backyard footage you've shot with it, just to get a sense of what we'll be working with? Include a few pans at a few different speeds, from meandering to whip. Also repeat this experiment in your kitchen at night with pretty dim light. (Point being, I wanna see what the camera does in deliberately low-light situations. Our RV might end up being dark, I wanna see if it'll be a problem or not.) The kitchen test could be done with the fridge door open, just so there's some variance going on.

Are you going to be recording dialogue? Got a plan for that? (Crazy as it sounds, I swear to god an iPhone can be made to do quite well for this kind of thing.)

Also, note, everyone is still expecting this to be a weird little dorky thing you shoot with a couple youngins,' nothing more. No pressure. We're just gonna go apeshit on the post side of it.  tongue

2. VFX people.

Who is your daddy and what does he do? More specifically, please reply with a filled-out version of this:

My email address is:
My level of expertise is:
My software (and version) of choice is:
FX techniques, pertaining-to-this, that I already know how to do are:
FX I'd like to learn, and maybe this could be my chance, are:
My availability is:

Post-Production people.

Owen and Dave have both expressed interest in cutting this. Anyone else? Whoever does cut it will (probably) be interfacing with Alex, because he won't be able to do much score-wise until he has a cut to watch, and won't be able to really dig into it until the cut is locked. So that'd be the order-of-operations. Potential editorial staff, what software are you working with for cutting?

Premiere CS6 + Audition for any audio stuff, unless that gets handled by a dedicated sound guy.

I'd like to do the sound mixing, if nobody objects. Been cutting my teeth on that stuff for a while now. Plus Alex and I would be able to interface on the sound stuff pretty easily.

Lightsaber roto is really simple. Maybe download a trial of AE and give a shot or two a try?

I still have the old "RP53" VFX Team lightsaber roto tutorials, somewhere, available for watchin.' You could definitely swing it if you wanted to give it a shot.

Happy to help with editing and color grading if needed, depending on the specifics of Zarban's timeline (I'm doing a few projects this month). Premiere CS 6 shop over here, with FilmConvert and Resolve for grading.

I will shoot test footage this weekend. It's the same camera I used for the road trip, but I uploaded overly downgraded video for that because the raw video was so big. I don't know if you saw any of the raw footage that I uploaded later.

I will start writing the script right away. Their mothers want to buy them proper costumes, so that will take a little time. But I imagine shooting to begin in a couple of weeks and take a couple of weekends. The post-production part can go to mid-November if necessary. That's when Sith boy's birthday is.

There will be dialog, mostly for Jedi girl, who will be the better actor. (Sith boy will probably be some Darth Maul-style freak.) I'll experiment with recording live dialog before the day. It's too bad my Edirol recorder crapped out last week....

PS,
Sith boy is already complaining that he wants Jedi girl to be the one to die because she always beats him in their plastic sword fights by going for his feet.  big_smile

Re: Zarban's lightsaber battle project

Uncle-Bonus-Points: Ask them what color lightsabers they want.

In fact, shoot me a picture of each of them holding a remote control as a "handle." I'll make add a saber effect for each kid, and then do duplicates in every color of the rainbow. Each of 'em can look at the "menu" of, like, fourteen color variations, and pick their favorite. This will make everyone excited.

Moving on.

Remember those trailers we shot for the Malariathon? Me on a greenscreen talking about Malaria and shit? Our audio set-up for that was a shotgun mic on a boom arm — fancy — and also a redundant microphone. The redundant microphone was an iPhone, with the mic-bit pointed at me, at the same distance as the shotty. Turns out, and I swear to god, the difference in recording quality was negligible. (The speakers on an iPhone will lie to you, but the mic itself is pretty solid.) You could almost certainly get away with something like this in a pinch, with no extra equipment necessary. Obviously you'll want to avoid wind and stuff, but it absolutely works. Otherwise, figure out something clever with your Tysto stuff.

Also, I don't know if Sith-Boy should win or lose, but he should definitely shoot some kick-ass force lightning. (I just recently came up with a cooler-than-normal way of pulling off that effect, and I want to put it through its paces. It'd be really cool. )

For the folks who might wanna help but don't know any VFX stuff, check this out. This is a saber roto tutorial I made for absolute VFX beginners back when RP53 was happnin.' If that seems like it'd be simple enough to pull off, snag a trial copy of After Effects and you're in. (I have several other video tutorials from this series, but since they're all Pink Fivey I'd wanna wait for Trey's okay-to-go before posting the lot of 'em publicly.)

Yay, making things!
