Topic: An Interesting TED discussion. (With some coincidences to DIF)

So a recent Ted Talk Presentation video was uploaded to Youtube that caught my eye. It's called how movies teach man-hood, and it basically trying to bright to light how kids movies all seem to follow a similar pattern now. In all honesty I think the presenters views are a bit misguided but still I thought it might make for an decent discussion.

Coincidently the Presenters name is Colin STOKES and he's talking about Star Wars.

Posted that in chat a day or two ago.

It's one of those, "I could never articulate how I felt about that until now," things. IMO this relates to the (taboo-ish ;-p ) discussion of the objectification of women in media. If a man is to be measured by how well he defeats the dragon, what is the message to the guy who cares for the knight's horse?

Great video. I read through the comments because I hate myself and I thought it was really interesting how many commenters are dismissive of the influence media has on people. Media is one of the biggest influences we have.

Find it to be lazy, reductive, pop sociology that basically starts with the preface, "Trust me, I'm a dad."

There's like a undergraduate degree's worth of Gender Studies stuff to unpack here, but instead you're left with this Gladwelly psuedo-intellectual popcorn chicken morsel of "Hey maybe men are assholes because Star Wars."

Aw, I thought this was a thread about that live action Family Guy movie that changes Brian the dog into a teddy bear for some reason.

I guarantee there were some very disappointed Seth Macfarlane fans out there who made that same mistake.

Yeah I found it hard to relate to most of the things this guy was saying. He didn't have me convinced of his point.

Honestly nowadays most kids TV shows sway the opposite way of what he was talking about. Just look at almost all the parents in kids TV shows. Actually, not just kids shows. Lots of mainstream shows too. The mothers are sensible and the fathers are bumbling idiots.

It's big in commercials too.

I guess this isn't exactly what the guy was talking about, but I felt it was worth mentioning.

I didn't take away that message, what I heard was "pay attention to the messages your kids are learning from what they watch".

I don't think his method for decoding those messages was well supported.

Maybe not, but I don't think most parents have access to peer-reviewed gender studies papers on the films their children watch, either.

A 10 minute TED video is not the solution to a problem, all it can do it make the viewer examine their own mind on a subject. I do think there's a profitable vector in a non-aligned child development media rating which could be pursued.

Without even watching it, I'm reminded of my reaction to reading "Guns, Germs, and Steel". I'm sure it wasn't the author's intent, or view, but I came away thinking, "OK, so every other culture was better than Europeans, but lost because of X".
