So, here's where this is at. The score is temp, but everything else is... kinda done.

I'm calling this the "extended edition," because after I'm done I'm gonna go back through and do a shorter cut, maybe lose some scenes, trim fat, all that. As it stands, I'm fucking psyched that this thing works and is getting finished.

(Quoting so the video is on this page, too.) (If you have your forum settings such that you have as many posts as possible per page, that is.)

Yeah, how do you guys feel about the temp score? I'm working on the "real" one right now, but I have a bad case of temp love for what's in there already.

I think the opening is still my favorite part, with Teague, Ewing and Dave with the rope.

However, it is definitely a fine job and again, glad to see it come together.

Fireproof - the idea behind doing a slimmer cut is to try to maintain the pacing established at the beginning there. It's doable, I just overwrote the shit out of this thing to try to cram everyone in. Some entire cast members might be lost in the attempt, come to think of it.  neutral

I'm far from an expert editor, so feel free to disregard this, but I really like this cut. I've watched it a few times and the pacing seems just fine. It falls into a rhythm after that first montage which really works. Maybe I'm biased, but I think it could be even longer. Those fun little throwaway bits between two or three people really sell the whole concept. I'd be sad to see them go. At the end of the day, this is a testament to this forum's wide variety of awesome people who came together from all corners of the globe to make something cool. And anyone who watches even that rough cut will get it.

I dunno, though. Maybe a tighter edit would be better. I guess I'd need to see it first.

Whilst I think the temp score works great, I think an original score would only add to the homebrew 'Holy shit, aren't we awesome?' nature of the piece.

Let's cut it down some. I need an insert or two, and less dead space.

You can cut my part. While I enjoy being a part of the project, I also am aware that it seems to lag the pacing, though that just might be me.

Re: DIF Community Project: DIF Road Trip!

1) Yeah, I was gonna say, there's a lot of room at the beginning and end of a lot of shots that could get pulled out really easily and would definitely alleviate some of the awkwardness (The bad awkwardness, not the awesome good awkwardness throughout). I would say do this before cutting any lines or chunks. If you can get the speed between the lines (or moments) up I think it'll flow a lot nicer.

2) So is the black and white a thing now? Kinda kills the end shots imo. Especially Toms and Saniss'

3)Really looking forward to an original score. Agree with the homebrew feel it would amplify.

Doc, I don't think it'll upset your sensibilites too much. We shall see. It's entirely possible I'll do the slim cut and go "eh, nevermind."

BDA, I'm not married to the black and white, but right now the project looks a lot more consistent than it would without the black and white. Even with my CC pass bringing everything together, the difference in quality of footage (and quality of chips) really jumps out at you in color. *shrug* I'm fiddlin,' might go either way.

Re: DIF Community Project: DIF Road Trip!

I quite like the B&W myself. Maybe a Wizard of Oz-style jump in to colour could work for the ending?

Thumbs up Thumbs down

Re: DIF Community Project: DIF Road Trip!

Alright I can see that. On the counterpoint I'd argue, that if you're having the text at the beginning setting this up as a project done around the world, an impossible roadtrip, it definitely adds another layer to that. Just level out everything tonally, so it's not jumping all over the place I think it could work.

Or yeah, the Wizard of Oz thing. That actually what I was expecting when I saw the B&W. Really punch that whole, "if the music is compelling enough this should work" or whatever the actual line is.

-Shrugs- But hey, I'm just the asshole on the outside looking in. That this works at all is still a miracle.

I like the B&W a lot, as it does provide more coherency in the shots, like you said.

I know you're going for slimmer, but some inserts of people lounging might give the impression that this is taking a long time, even to the cast members.

Re: DIF Community Project: DIF Road Trip!

Here's the "slim cut," three minutes shorter. Mostly removing air here and there, although I lopped off a couple exchanges that I thought weren't working so great, either for pacing or tone or whatevs. Saniss and Maggot got the brunt of it.

This was made with no score, but then I was fiddling with YouTube's "add music" thingy and didn't realize it would take a while to process that, too, so now I can't turn off the music until it finishes, and I wanna go to bed. So by the time you see this, it might have inappropriately loud music over it. It'll be gone tomorrow.

Re: DIF Community Project: DIF Road Trip!

1) Random thing, but when Teague says "Zarban, I don't think Pavlich likes playing that game," he's still back at McDonalds, and it kinda stands out.

2) Man, the score really spins this thing. I actually really like YouTube's random jazz track. It fits with the black-and-white, quirkiness and energy of the film.

3) Yup, you were right. This slimmer cut is good. I'd prefer to have more people chatting, but whatevs. It works better as a whole.

Re: DIF Community Project: DIF Road Trip!

Agreed on all points with DocSub.

Unfortunately, the music is as loud as you were fearing it would be, Teague. But I dug the jazzy tone. I think whatever you'll come up with will be better though. I'd actually love to hear a solo piano undercurrent, I think.

Any chance I could get a special thanks for my friends Jake Schwartz and Brett Morris? Couldn't have done my segments without them. Maybe there should be a special segment of the credits or people whose cars/cameras/whatevers we borrowed.

If we're doing that; Liam Swann, Thomas Smith and Daniel Gibson all helped me out.

It might be a detail, but when the camera cuts between two characters in the same seat, it kind of breaks the illusion. Specifically, I'm thinking about Zarban's Derek cutting to Otero at 2:06.

I see my location is "...?"  Technically, my parts were shot around Richmond upon Thames and Twickenham, England.  But, as they're also part of Greater London,  a simple "London" might be the better caption.

Very pleased that you got the shot of Big Ben(*) in there, too.

(*): Yes, I know 'Big Ben' is the name of the bell, not the clock tower. Please write your complaints on a postcard and send them to someone who cares.

Also, in anticipation of this being done: "woo-hoo!"
