...off the top of my head, I guess I would prefer to have that story take place among a crew of ostensibly sane people on one spaceship, as opposed to involving a second fucking spaceship and an insane sunburn monster.

But doesn't make sense that the man basically had a breakdown? There is def a sense of otherworldly things going on.
Not only have I listened to your commentary, I also have listened to both the directors commentary and the physicist's commentary several times over the years(Sunshine is one my favs). They basically say that the man has
gone insane. the secondary comm. track with the Professor guy does a better job of explaining the ending. It's been awhile now, so I wouldn't want to mince their words, but I think that if you wanted to rewatch the movie listening to audio track 3(I think), any of you would enjoy the hell out of it, IMO.

Sorry Guys, but I still think that there is nothing wrong with this movie as it is.
Teague, I am pretty sure that you and others there have stated that you are not really a horror fan? Maybe this is part of the issue that you're having with it. Some of the greatest horror, horror/scifi have been ones that 'went to the mansion' as you call it(I still forget what movie that is referencing). The ones that were going in one direction, and then did a 90 degree turn into crazytown.
To me the is a sci/fi movie with elements or horror. Everyone assumed the movies plot would basically be your 'spaceship breaks down/repair in the nick of time' type plots.I give the filmmakers mad props for basically turning the movie on its ear. I realize this seems to be in the minority here, but I think that if you agree that you're not a horror fiend as I am, but if you were you would be more susceptible to my way of thinking? Maybe? It could happen, LOL.

BTW, How is Mike doing(us Mikes have to keep tabs on each other, LOL)? Not sure if you have another form set up for this question or not.
Man I am missing you guys fucking hardcore right now. Still combing through your archives looking for something I haven't listened to yet.

Um, was referring to the Frozen Broadway musical, the bolded part in my quote.

I've done the whole commute thing (80 miles round trip a day, 5 days a week) and had teachers who did longer. No stranger to that. Small town, rural community, etc.

Ahhh, Gotcha

I've been more of a forum lurker than an active member, but I feel like I know all of you. I read all the posts and occasionally hang out in the chat. (I'll probably appear from time to time to rant - like if the Broadway version of Frozen actually happens.)

Can someone please explain, simply, what 'going to the mansion' is again. I simply can't remember what movie it was originally in reference to. I don't want to have to listen to a half a dozen commentaries to find the answer.

Thanks in advance....

WOW, you don't see that everyday...

And it looks like he is going to make good with the Alien sequel, by connecting it with the first 2 movies,
yet somehow not undo 3 and 4? Not sure how thats going to happen, but I can't wait to see it.

Probably just becuase of the nostalgia factor, having seen this many, many times when it played on HBO when I was a kid, but I thought the movie was pretty cool. Esp the giant sets, and the way they were free from people moving about, gave it that creepy, dreamlike quality.
And the score, to me, always seemed haunting IMO. You guys may know more about music perhaps because you know how to write and read music, but for someone who listened to this when he was like 6 it was pretty cool.
Didn't mind that it was played over certain scenes, like the blaster shootout.
And the ending to me was just for effect, didn't really matter if it was accurate. To me it was just cool way to show something that can only theorize still.  The Captain ended up becoming one with his creation.
If you guys have seen the movie Interstellar yet, it also has a similar improbable ending, but of course it's Nolan
so it will be praised, lol.

Oh, BTW, Vincent and BOB look completely different(Vincent has a round top and Bob has a 'Devo" style top) and have 2 completely functions. Vincent even says it when first meeting BOB.
And speaking of things like the dining room and the chandelier, thats all explained earlier when Borgnine was explaining how the guy bilked the tax payers into paying for the 'grandiose' ship. Just listening to the guy
speak you can tell that he would def have a captains setup like that. Not really fair comparing it to the ISS, lol,
when this was supposed to be more like Star Trek future.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't the gravity from the black hole make it necessary to use thrusters
to speed up and slow down when approaching the larger ship?

You guy just have to do 'To Live and Die In L.A.'
It has to be as close to a perfect movie as you can get, besides some funky editing, But parts of it are like an 80's music video anyway.
If any of you haven't seen it, you should. Probably has one of the best car chase scenes in any movie ever made.
I just love the music, but I was born in 75' so, ya.....

In the beginning god created Jennifer Connelly. Jennifer connelly was without form and void, and the Spirit of God was over the face of her. And God said, "Let there be boobs," and there were boobs. And God saw that the boobs were good; and God separated the boobs from one another..... On the final Day, God finished the Jennifer Connelly, and he spoke onto her. "Jennifer Connelly, thou shalt go forth and bring erections to all men, cause jealousy in most women, sharing thine divine beauty with the world. Thine skin shall radiate unknown powers amongst men, causing teeny spots upon thine pants, and they shall go away ashamed, but knowest thou that thine powers be used for good. Especially in "The Hot Spot". And Jennifer Connelly said, "Kay."

OK, IDK why anybody would even think this, but Jennifer Connelly DID NOT have a breast reduction! If yo look at her in this movie, even, she isn't that big. The only time she looks large, is when she is in a role where she has gained a little weight, because if you know anything about women, those things expand and contract as her dress size changes. If you are married, or just have a girlfriend that has been pregnant, you would she this dramatically. Sure they get bigger because of the milk thing, but allot of it is due to the extra fat that a woman gains.
My wife has a very large B-Size, but over the last 15 yrs I have known her, she has been on diets, and before that was pregnant with our daughter.  They have been down to a 32D, up To a 36EE, now back down to a 38DDD.
The only actress that is confirmed for sure that had a breast reduction is the Punky Brewster girl.

To me it seems obvious that the cop was getting the same messages from the aliens when he was
a kid, but didn't put it together. This is why he was so obsessed to finding out what he had seen.
Plus he was also getting the dreams again as an adult. The alien must have sent out the dream
message 50 years ago and now again in the time of the movie. I clearly remember all of this part of
the plot when I watched this as a kid, which I would have been 10 years old at the time in 1985.

OK, I haven't written anything for awhile, mostly because I haven't need to I guess.
But there was something that was said by just about everyone, right after they
download the data from the factory owner guy into Damien's head. It was about
how Matt kept holding his head every once and awhile and has a fit. You guys said it
was unclear why he was doing this, and that maybe it was the radiation or something,
and that the movie didn't make it clear.
OK, maybe it seemed clear to me, I don't know why, but the reason for Matt's fits/headaches
were due to the corrupted data that he received into that chip in his head. I thought it
seemed obvious, since the Sandro guy was barking about how "the data is corrupted",
and Matt orders him to redo it, and then the bad guys show up. Well anyway, Matt was
fine the entire time until immediately after the download into his head. Maybe there should
have been some dialog there from Matt like "damn, my head, that download is messing me
up!", but to me it would have been too forced, especially during an action sequence.

This movie was just OK to me, probably because there was a couple of mush better movies that proceeded this one that were about the real Lehman Brothers situation. One is an HBO made movie called Too Big to Fail from 2011 with an Award winning cast.  And the other, better movie, was a step by step account of the weekend before the Monday the shit hit the fan, and it was a BBC TV Movie called "The Last Days of Lehman Brothers:, with James Cromwell and a slew of other great American actors. In fact I didn't even know it was a BBC production until just now when I was looking up the title. If you really want to see the face of Evil and what these guys did behind closed doors, then I suggest the "Last Days.." movie out of the 2. Also there is the Oscar winning documentary "Inside Job" narrated by Jason Bourne that explains what happened to the Layman like me.

Oh, and BTW, I broke down and bought a new badass keyboard with excellent response, which was part of the problem that kept me forming sentences that sent to the end of the post box(please don't ask me to explain why), so you guys can stop giving me crap about my hard-to-read message...

OK, so you know that I sometimes feverishly try to defend the logic of movies that I love. Well I love this movie, seen it so many times I just don't know. But holy shit does it have some fucked up science in it. I clearly remember the scene where he was braising the heavy cables to the wall toward the end, to get the "power", lol, and I remember thinking that they do uses solar panels in this fashion.
But the most important thing about it is that there was NO POLARITY!! How can you run any AC or DC powered components with just positive or negative, well you simply can't.
Also, and probably the most important wacky science/engineering mess up is the "reactor" powered ship!!
I don't know if most  people know how a nuclear reactor powered submarine works, but it is basically a steam engine because thats all the reactor does is turn water into steam which powers turbines and that powers the generators. all of the motors on those subs and aircraft carriers are electric.
So back to our movie ship. You are telling me that A:there was enough room to have a crap load of water for cooling and for the steam turbine. and B: When he pulled out the reactor rods, the ship shut down as if he was pulling out the batteries, LMAO, when of course the steam turbine that they somehow found space for would still be moving, and there would be shit tons of batteries for storage as a buffer between the steam generator and the ship power distribution grid.

Oh, and  Mike is funny as shit when he is shit faced, LMAO, us Mikes are always the life of any party, lol.

Baseball is the easiest sport to grasp by far. It's basically a board game. The goal of the players is to start at "home," round the other three squares and return to home, and when they do they score a point. Only one person can be on a base at a time so they have to round the bases in sync. The ball is a timer -- they can only move after it's been struck by the bat, and if the ball makes it to a base before they do -- the other's team's goal -- that playing piece (i.e. player) is removed from the board. If the player at bat fails to hit the ball after three chances, he's removed from the board for that round (inning). When three players fail in this way, the team's turn is over and they swap. The team who was trying to hit the ball becomes the one trying to catch it and get it to the bases before the other team, who is now trying to round the bases. They play nine paired rounds and whichever team has accumulated the most points at the end wins.

Don't ask me about football, though, because I have no idea.

Now you do cricket.

Ya, I agree, Baseball has to be the easiest sport by far. Mostly because you don't need to know
every single little thing. You hit a ball and run around a field before they catch the ball and try
and tag you with it, and there are 3 safe places where you can stop running. Then the next guy
hits the ball. miss 3 times and your out. 3 outs and the teams switch places.
thats it, thats all you really need to know to watch it with friends on TV.
Now football, forget it, I don't even know all the rules. But I don't watch sports, ever, so...

There doesn't seem to be a thread started for this episode. Hmmm....

Anyway. I just wanted to say that as far as the plot for this movie goes,
I remember clearly when I first watched this movie at age 14 in the theater,
that the reason for them all being split up was due to there not being any
ghosts anywhere to catch.
I think that people forget that even in the first movie that they had never, ever
seen a ghost till the library scene, and that the only reason that that library ghost
was there at all was because of the "Gozer Day" approaching. As soon as they got rid
of Gozer they would NOT be able to see ANY ghost, let alone catch them, and would be
forces to go back doing whatever they were doing before. Now that they had part 2
to see, we were able to actual see them go back to there regular jobs. When the
new threat come about, and the supernatural activity is back to levels where it
can be detected by humans again, they are back in business.
Basically ts like this: The Ghostbusters live in the same world we do. If there
had been no gozer day, they  would have still been kicked out of the university
and most likely be in these jobs that they are in now, minus the Ghostbusters party gigs.

Looking at that picture, I see its kind of hard to tell, but on either side of the
screen are those red theater curtians hanging.
These are some older pics of my setup, and they are not on a wall anymore,
but you can see all my harddrives filled with movies.
